Sure republicans gave tours when the capital was closed to tours before the attack and show people where offices and other not easily found areas and the few windows that had not been reinforced but they did for friends and family members and republicans would never call it reconnaissance. Sure maps were given and drawn

But following through on their threat will require a serious outlay of cash: The external hard drive they would need to store the hundreds of hours of footage could cost as much as $20,000.

Wait, what? How much data do they have to require that much storage? Or is it a $200 external drive with a government markup?

Considering republicans have been saying they didn't lead any "reconnaissance" tours they know they gave tours and there is videos of them doing them.

The only external hard drive I know of that even comes close tops out at $13k, the 20 TB SSD Apricorn Aegis Fortress L3. FIPS 140-2 Level 3 validation doesn't come cheap... But that seems like a whole hell of a lot of overkill.

They have to be taking about SAN storage. It's pretty easy to spend that much with that solution.

I have the relevant footage here. Let's take a look.

5 January 2021. Washington, DC.

Democrats: I dare you to try to overturn the election.
Republicans: No, we would never do that.
Democrats: I double dog dare you.
Republicans: Well, when you put it that way..

Conclusion: It is all the Democrats' fault.

"Clearly things have changed when one of our committee members is being insinuated that he led reconnaissance tours in the Capitol on Jan. 5 when we know for a fact the video footage shows otherwise," a senior aide to the committee told The Hill.

And I know in fact Gone With The Wind is a great classic movie!

Maddow had a decent segment on it tonight. The investigation was requested by a woman NJ rep. She was military trained and saw them in the building. Her training kicked in and she sent the request.

Forensic evidence to vouchsafe the republic from insurrection shouldn't be a trading bizaar. But then, vital forensic evidence for the murder of Kennedy was hidden behind personal property and Time Incorporated's "right" to secure its license.

You act like 20K is real money in government terms. In reality, they could probably dig that much out in loose change from their navels. Instead they whined to a sympathetic reporter who would duly make their case for them. When all they really have to do is pick the money from their navels.

You may want to double check those numbers. I played around on cctvcalculator.net and was able to pretty easily fit 100 1080p cameras into 2.5 TB. I had to make some assumptions, but they seem pretty reasonable based on my (admittedly limited) experience with these kinds of setups.

I'm not an expert by any means, but even the crappy CCTV system I used years ago was able to adjust framerates based on motion detection and use H.264. I'd guess that largely static backgrounds improving compression rates doesn't hurt. Surveillance footage can be pretty lightweight.

Sure. At Jimmy-Bill's Used Cars And Eatery it can. At the US Congress maybe less so.

We are talking about evidence in an alleged attempts to deny the peaceful transfer of power that was once the envy of the world and to overthrow the United States government by force.

"We all know the Republicans wouldn't have done anything anyway, so it's the fault of the Democrats who could have done something but didn't."

I've been on Fark since about 2007, and I do not recall EVER hearing the word "codified" before this month. So apparently this thing that nobody was concerned about for the last 15 years is now solely and entirely the fault of the Democrats for never thinking about it until just this year...LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.

If it was that important, you'd think one of these all-knowing motherfarkers would have said something in the last two decades. Anyone? Bueller?

Loudermilk: "How dare you accuse anyone of reconnaissance tours?! I'mma gonna launch an ethics investigation into the eeebil Dems!"

(Video evidence of Laudermilk giving a tour surfaces)

"Sure I gave a tour to a family with their children. Some had red hats on. That's their crime?! Red hats?!"

(Video evidence of tour participants pummeling Capitol Police the next day surfaces)

"It was a one time thing. In the past. Biden is senile! Inflation! Smoke bomb!"

It's all so insanely stupid, and almost funny, until you realize how deadly serious it is, and how perilously close we came to a successful coup, and how it's gonna be successful next time unless every last farker involved is hung for treason.

Here's the thing. No republican knows how to swap out a hard disc. It's advanced technology that does not exist in the bible. So they need to send one of their idiots fine, smart Bob Roberts interns back to some vocational school to learn how to open a computer and follow the instructions from the hard drive manufacturer.

Yes, republicans are stupid, but they think everyone else thinks they are not subhuman vermin.

Yes, handling a drive may require a forensically sound process, but 20 grand is republican stupid.

$20000 isn't an external hard drive. It's a top-loader disk shelf loaded with enough disks that I'd conservatively estimate it could hold 700TB of data, if not close to a petabyte.

Which is between 20 and 30 _thousand_ hours of 4K footage encoded at 80 megabits/second. The only way that $20K of storage could only hold "hundreds" of hours of footage is if the footage in question is completely uncompressed 4K video.

/Just paid $7200 for a double front-loader shelf, half full, with 180T of disks in it
//2 sets of 12 bays, 1 behind the other
///Third slashie wishes it were full of Nimbus Data exadrives

A $20,000 hard drive? I can buy a terabyte portable for roughly $120. And that's just one off the top of my head. Blu-ray holds 2-3 hours easy (Just a rough estimate, I know it can hold far more compressed video). Let's just say 100 Blu-ray discs, for 300 hours total. So one $30 spindle of discs is 300 hours of video. $20 Grand is like 667 of those $30 spindles. So they needed the rough equivalent of 66,700 Blu-ray discs?

Probably not, government procurement math. That $20,000 hard drive could just as easily be a SanDisk 32GB from Amazon.

Forget about optical disks. Too small, too slow.

Consumer-grade hard drives are available up to 20TB with the best $/TB around 16TB the last time I checked. For $20k I would expect to get some sort of self-contained NAS box with a redundant array of disks.

Tape drives are still around, but the up-front cost of the drive is so high that you have to be dealing with a lot of data before it's a net cost saving over spinning hard drives.
