I once wrote the Smithsonian about opening other museums around the country, so that some catastrophe (a nuke, for example) wouldn't wipe out entire collections.*

They replied that they "needed" a collection to be in one location to make it easier to do research. What a crock of shiat. If someone wants to examine all 2,000 specimens of a particular species of parrot, budget for travel in your research funding.

Quit making people go to DC to see a fractionof their collections.

*Collections lost in the World Trade Center attack.

My mom was an athropologist at the Smithsonian when I was little. True to 70s style, when there was a day off of school that didn't correspond to a government holiday she'd just take me to work and cut me loose in the Natural History Museum. I couldn't have been more than 6 to 8. For reference her co-workers gave me candy cigarettes as treats.

I'm gonna go ahead and "iconic" to the list of words people use that no longer have their original meaning. I don't even know what they're trying to use it as here. Legendary? Famous? Rare? Never-before-seen?

The Marilyn Monroe air-vent-skirt photo (you can see it in your mind Just from my basic description) is iconic. The Iwo Jima flag raising is iconic. Ali standing over Liston is iconic.

While these collection photos are very neat and I'd love the opportunity to do a similar shoot, absolutely nothing about them is "iconic".

As a curator at the National Museum of American History, I can't help but look at these photos and wish my storage areas were as orderly....
