IDisposable: Russia has weather and other natural advantages when playing a DEFENSIVE game.  But when they go on offense, their general ineptitude comes into play.

They also are master of the choo choo when defending their home turf.  But when they have to load their equipment on to trucks as opposed to trains (as in Ukraine), things break down quickly.

I rented that game for a week and never got past that farking aircraft carrier.  Not once.

I own that game and think I successfully landed maybe 3 times...

If you want a real challenge, try 'Chuck Yeager Avoidance Therapy Advanced Flight Simulator' sometime and try landing the SR-71 Blackbird.  That thing wouldn't settle down onto the ground if you dropped a farking 100 ton weight on it!

Chuck Yeager is one of my all-time heroes, but I got *real* tired of that smirking face telling me "Really screwed the pooch on that one, huh?"

By contrast, I *never* had any trouble putting the F/A-18 Hornet down on the carrier in SubLogic Jet.

WOW that's a game I've not thought about in a long time.  Running that on my Tandy 1000HX was a struggle.  There was one experimental plane in that game that you could barely fly straight and level as I recall.  I do remember flying the SR71 up enough the sky turned black and I thought that was the coolest thing ever.

I owned the game. I made the landing twice.
I didn't make the landing much more than that.

In most ways for a a very long time.

They are good at cruelty and suppression. And lobbing shells aimlessly.

I love stories like this about Russia

This is almost like playing a major RPG and you grind the hell out of thinking it's going to start to get farming hard eventually.  Then you overdo it and reach the point where you find out you can crush the main boss without breaking a sweat.  That's where the world is with Russia right now.

I often wonder, how "well" is the Russian nuclear arsenal maintained?

foo monkey: cleek: that hard segue to that Masterworks segment blew my mind.

"And the Soviet Union learned they did not have the funds to support their one capital ship.  With the Capital One Venture Card's cash-back program and no annual fees, you'll have more funds to support your fleet of ships."

Somebody named "Peggy" managed to bilk the Soviet card holder out of almost a million $$$ in gas money.

If only they had gone with Capitol One.

"Kuznetsov is more of a Potemkin village, which if you are unfamiliar, is a construction whose purpose is to provide an external facade to a country that's doing poorly, to make it look like they're doing better than they really are. Kind of like Instagram but for countries"

Ruthless.

lifeslammer: cranked: SpectroBoy: I feel like the global intelligence agencies really need to be looked at in detail.
It sure seems like all they did is read Putin's press releases and regurgitate then on letterhead.

Weak enemies don't encourage bottomless budgets.

And one thing the KGB/FSB was/is very, very good at is tagging anyone who tries to spy in russia and "dealing with them"

Also remember, they only had six carrier capable aircraft, so they kept painting new numbers on them until people thought they had 60.

Some of the smartest and most intelligent people you will ever meet are Russians...and they stay the fark away from the government, and especially the military.

Russia's real problem are the Oligarchs, who just run things the way the communist higher ups did, without the pretense that they are serving the people.  The communist higher ups in turn just ran things the same way the Czar and the Russian nobility ran things, but claiming they were doing it for the workers instead of God and Emporer.

Probably not very well at all.  The problem is the handful of nukes that do work, and are attached to missiles tht get through is probably more than enough to really fark the world over.

Cut US military spending by 80%.   Now.  Not doing so is criminal at this point.   Make up some new department where former military help communities (and not by everyone becoming cops) and give them all the money.   Close 80% of the bases, sell half the navy and air force and army equipment, spread it around all our allies at a discount and let the rest of the planet use our gear to kick idiots like Russia, just like we are literally now doing in Ukraine.

Adversaries can crank out the carriers, aircraft, escorts, supply ships, and yes even the necessary drydocks but they won't have the toy they think they do.

Nobody appreciates just what it takes to actually operate those things. The Americans have been perfecting flight deck operations for 80 years.  They make it look easy.  It's not.

You build the thing after you have built the logistics infrastructure needed to support it.

A thing without support simply dies.
