Not sure why this would be surprising.  They're probably invading even more habitat.

What jobs are even out there in Kennewick besides the govt?

In all seriousness: define "the government" -- there's a crapton of jobs at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and a bunch of other high-tech companies surrounding the Hanford Nuclear site.

/They're also currently going through the permitting to build a 3,000 acre solar power plant and greatly expand a bunch of new wind farms
//And on the low end, Amazon is gearing up to open two separate 1 million+ square feet distribution centers on the other side of the river in Pasco, withing spitting distance of Kennewick.

Yeah I keep forgetting that Amazon is taking advantage of red state areas like the Tri-Cities.

Humble brag sorta. Back when I was 20, way pre-marriage, I met a cougar at a bar, she said she was 50yo, I have doubts and think she may have been even older. She basically threw herself at me, and I did the deed. It was, not great. Lots of things sagging and weird smells. Nevertheless, I bragged about it like crazy. I thought I was so cool. Now 25 years later I look back at it and think, how gross. When you're young you'll do anyone that spreads their legs. And thats all I have to say about cougars.

In 3 years of living in the Steamboat Island(WA) area I've spotted 2 (possibly the same one) in my yard. From what I've read there aren't a lot of them out here but they are definitely a thing to be aware of. I haven't seen one since we got a dog. Not to say the dog is scaring them off, but the deer tend to stay away from our house now that they know there's a barking monster patrolling the area, so we don't have as much cougar food around us.

Ha! That made my day.

When I was 30, I was seduced by a 50 something Jazz singer. Honestly, she was one of the best, but she tried to dress me in her son's clothes he'd left in her house. Lol kinda weird.

The other day, my 60+ year old co-worker and I were alone in the office and I could've SWORE she was hitting on me. She looks and acts like Madonna, asked if I were single, starting give me TMI, asked when and what days I go into the office. Like an interview.

That tends to happen when you're in a fairly rural part of the country.

Even more attractive, I think, are the low prices for electricity.  Lots of server farms/data centers springing up along the Columbia, particularly near the dams.

My folks used to live up on "da rainch" in NE Minnesota. Bears and wolves, sure, but no mountain lions, right? Well their friends had the grandkids up and were all looking out in the yard at the momma deer and her cute little baby deer - when a mountain lion jumped out of the woods, grabbed the fawn, snapped its neck and ran away with it.

Great "circle of life" lesson for the horrified kiddos :) And that's when we learned that sometimes mountain lions wander in from the Dakotas when they are teenagers and on a sort of walkabout.

Lol, amazing. "She was one of the best". I've heard a number of people say that about encounters with older ladies, their experience coming into play and all that. Wish I could say the same. For every Demi Moore type, there are dozens of chain-smoking, alcoholic, bar flies that don't take care of themselves, have ruined their lives, and just want to take someone home so they can feel something they've lost. Sadly my experience was the latter.

Ehhhhhh...a far more likely explanation is that there wasn't actually a cougar.

Plenty of people report seeing cougars, but most of the time they're mistaken.  Lots of bobcats get reported as cougars for example.  People will insist that the cat was huge and there's no way that it could be anything else etc etc, but then somebody finds the tracks and its definitely not a cougar.

Hell, lots of people report dogs as cougars.  People aren't good at identifying wildlife, especially if they get nervous.

Except cougar sightings actually aren't all that uncommon on the edges of town, and they most definitely live in the surrounding areas... With the prevalence of doorbell cameras and such, there have been plenty of confirmed sightings. They are much more skittish than coyotes though, those can be seen running along the railroad tracks in the middle of town.

Since my experience seeing cougars and evidence of cougars (trail cams, security cams, etc.) in or near wooded areas, I'm surprised to read about cougar sightings in the Tri-Cities.  The surrounding area is shrub-steppe, which apparently provides sufficient habitat.
