What an idiot. He could have just bought the NFT of the picture of the guitar instead.

And apparently it only plays five chords and the pentatonic scale .

I have one of the 2012 re-issue models and it's an awesome guitar whether you love or hate Kurt. Love that MIJ Fender craftsmanship. The Duncan JB just farkin cuts through.

Most recently, Cobain's Mustang was owned by Jim Irsay, owner of the National Football League team Indianapolis Colts. Irsay auctioned the guitar off to help raised money for the Colts' mental-health awareness initiative, "Kicking the Stigma." Prior to Sunday's auction, "Kicking the Stigma" had donated more than $16 million to local and national metal-health-oriented organizations

Better than being some trophy in some out of touch Gen-Exer's mansion.

Isn't that some guy the same guy who has drug and alcohol issues?  Also owns the Colts?

"This guitar is big, and it relates so much to stigma," Irsay told the Indy Star. "When you have a mental illness, people die. These are fatal diseases - bipolar, schizophrenia, post-partem depression, alcoholic addictions. With fatal diseases, people die and they don't choose to die. Those of us who are alive, we're not stronger or better. We didn't get our act together more. We didn't have more character. That's where it's so false."

This guy should speak less.

Did he try asking David Geffen if he would buy it for him?

A guitar is worth whatever somebody wants to pay for it, I have a collection and think that's a reasonable system, but the price of this guitar is pretty whack. By comparison, we had a thread about Les Paul's original Les Paul being at auction a couple of months ago, a guitar I'd value many times over Cobain's Fender, which ended up selling for less than a quarter of the price of this one. Curt was cool and all, but his contributions to guitar aren't on the same level as Les freaking Paul and I'm surprised that wasn't reflected by the value of each.

I thought Peter Buck from REM had that one, but upon further investigation it was a custom the had made.

A 69 Mustang not owned by Cobain is worth about $5,000.

I am waiting for McCartney to put his Hofner up for auction. I wouldn't be surprised if some paid 9 figures for it.

The Unplugged one sold for $6 million, two years ago.

imagine being so rich that you just buy all these million + dollar instruments, just to sit in your palace and look at them.  maybe they'll gain another million in value by the time you die, whatever. you don't care.  you have them and can feel such pride in what you get to show off to your millionaire friends.

what a farking joke. a 500$ guitar thrashed out by a teenager or a young adults first band, played to death because its the one you got, thats the real value.  My main guitar has worn down frets from 25+ years of playing, sweat rusted trem & screws. Its been there with me through thick and thin.  I saved 600 bucks over the course of a year to get it and my old man committed to putting the same amount into whatever i saved to get a guitar i wanted.

Im sure everyone including me has a price, but it would be pretty god damn high and far and away higher than whatever market value exists.

Bait, I know, but you can't count just the chords without all of the key modulations.

That's a lotta money for a jinxed guitar.

I'm left-handed and it's still weird to see a left-handed guitar.  Like watching a left-handed QB.  Something is just off.
Still an awesome piece of history though.  Wish I had the scratch to own it.

And if you RTFA you'd see it's basically a donation to a mental health support group.

Irsay gonna Irsay.

Dude seems to have a strong bent for buying stuff associated with people and scenes he would never be a part of. His guitar collection is insane! My boy and I saw an exhibit in Indy of guitars, and most of the ones that had a big name associated with them were on loan from him. He loans them out with his name associated, like anyone wants to see a guitar because he is tangentially associated with it?

His dad was an ass, but his dad made himself rich. Irsay is all daddy issues and cash. Poor guy.

He owns or owned the scroll for the original manuscript for Kerouac's On The Road. That work is so beyond him that it is difficult for me to understand his interest. Is he sad he is too rich to be a bohemian?

I was busted a few times for drug issues, but got rich guy treatment. We can only hope the organization created to support his charity is more competent than he is, and they are actually trying to help  rather than get his branding right.

And Fark him for how he treated Peyton. Punk ass tweeting bastich..

/If I had enough money to buy my way out of any trouble, I think I'd get up to more interesting trouble than he has.

Rolling Stone reports the winning bid for Cobain's former guitar Sunday was from Jim Irsay Foundation, which means Irsay will retain ownership of the instrument.

So Irsay loves himself, better than you.

Anyone with money can buy anything.   The best stories are about people who were given iconic item for various reasons, and a bonus for if they can play them.

Good lord that would be heavenly, but hell I'd settle for any of those martins with the bigsby neck.  I always drooled over Roy Orbison's gretsch with the Gibson neck.

In 2022 we consider suicidal ideation a mental health issue deserving of love and help and support.

In 2022 we recognize that a lot of people came by their opioid addiction through treatment of chronic pain and the uneven/unethical treatment of such by the medical community.

But all that flies out the window whenever one of you edgelords decides its fun to hate on Kurt Cobain because apparently Nirvana touched you in a funny place/made some hair metal guys sad.

In 2022 you're still a dick.
