But maybe we don't need governance by someone with the GDP of a small state...

He followed that up with another, saying "the administration tried hard to inject even more stimulus into an already over-heated, inflationary economy and only Manchin saved them from themselves. Inflation is a regressive tax that most hurts the least affluent."

Well...he's not wrong.  But it's not just the Democratic economic agenda that's boosted inflation.  It is apparently global (warning: possible paywall), and has nothing to do with the $1400 American people got a year or so ago.

I understand that it's largely my subjective perception due to whatever brain chemical soup I've got going on, but it seems like over the last couple months the A-list billionaires have been trying to take their...billionaire-ness...to the next level. Elon Musk has the whole Twitter fiasco going on, Bezos is now trying to cast himself as a policy expert on Twitter explaining why it's a mistake to do anything to inconvenience rich assholes, and - just last weekend - I discovered that Meta is now running ads on whatever streaming service my wife was watching about how one of the best things about Meta is that it collects your data to give you personalized ads. This was a new one. Whereas before it was either "we don't talk about that" or "hey, look, it's free and we have to make money somehow," they're now using "we track all your activity to sell you things" in frenetic musical ads as a selling point.

/ I really don't know if Bezos can spend enough money on a political campaign to overcome the fact that he's Jeff Bezos

In another thread, Elon's been (and has been for a while I'm sure) compared to a Bond villain.  So we've got Bezos as Lex Luthor, Elon as Dr. No (I guess???)... what other billionaires can be paired with any particular villain?

"If you look carefully at this article, you may notice I've drawn some subtle parallels to Donald Trump in several dozen places. Musk and Trump do not share the exact same vision of the future, and don't have the same ideology. But they are absolutely coming from the same toxic 'I'm a billionaire and no one has the right to question me' mindset, and are exploiting many of the same flaws in the system to get ahead.

[...]

This isn't about choosing between Musk's version of the future and Trump's. This is about choosing between a world in which we actually hold powerful people accountable for their behavior, and one in which we are all just picking which billionaire's personality cult we want to mindlessly join."

I don't understand why Democratic politicians and news outlets aren't shouting this from the rooftops: inflation is global right now. The proposed policies (formerly Build Back Better) aim to decrease costs in all these various things (medicine, childcare, etc.) so that you have more money even while other sectors cost more due to global inflation. Various studies have shown that these policies won't cause more inflation.

/oh wait, there aren't Democratic news outlets.

Seriously. Lateveria is a dire dictatorship no lie but they are a superpower on par with Wakanda and the United States. Russia is ... what, again? Upper Volta with rockets?

Let's not even talk about how deeply Doom cares about the Romani. It just doesn't compare.

Actually this whole idea of comparing fictional characters with our current problems is iffy. Fiction is colorful. Even its villains are people, if it's written well anyway. These bloodless motherfarkers in our world however, are as banal as a very banal thing indeed. Take the plainest beige cubicles you can imagine and fill them with stacks of US hundreds.

That's our billionaires. Any one of these guys could end world hunger tomorrow. Not ameliorate, not assuage. End. That's a choice they're making. Any one could pull a Tony Stark and openly dedicate their immense resources to a more peaceful, more just world. They prefer to buy Twitter and elections. Again: a choice.

They are small men. Not villains.

Just rich.
