Per this list of "Best Selling Music Artists", 165 million records sold would put her with the likes of U2, Garth Brooks, Aerosmith, ABBA, Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen, and others. And yet, her name doesn't appear anywhere on the list, period.

So yeah, gonna have to call bullshiat on that claim...

She has 4 albums.  165/4 is 41.25.  So unless every one of her albums is up there with Thriller....

Maybe she is counting singles sales or something, which isn't the number commonly used and would be just fishing for a gaudy number.

Maybe she is counting some sort of "album equivalent" with streaming, which is a bogus number.

She's a featured artist on a lot of other albums as well that are not her own. Like a lot of female vocalists gone pop she did a ton of vocals in the edm/electronic space before managing to break out on her own. Im guessing those are being factored in.

Records are an entire album (unless you have a double album, I guess).  So yes, they're the same thing.

It's just outdated terminology since very few artists release 'records' these days.  Although, to be fair, not many artists release albums these days either since things are purely digital and there's no need to demarcate an album's worth of music.

But when they were both a thing, they meant the same thing.

I am sure people can just listen to any of your other songs that all sound the same and know what the new song you didn't write sounds like, so no loss.

Like anything, it's how you use it.

There's a comedian Christina P who has worked the algorithm in such a way that every tik-tok she sees is the weirdest, socially awkward people doing their thing. I believe she curates them and posts them on her instagram. I see/hear a lot of them during her and her husband's podcast.

I can't figure out how to find these videos on tik-tok. My feed is still videos with hundreds and thousands of views. I'm trying to figure out how to see videos that have like 500 views after a week.

That list may be out of date. Just going by her certified platinum records, she's got 51 million in certified units in the US only. That's using the same data source as that wiki page.

From the Wiki page linked above: For clarity, the sources used, say the term "records" (singles, albums, videos) and not "albums".

Per the link above, singles is the number commonly used, at least by the RIAA and their foreign counterparts.

That said, by my count, she's got somewherein the 50-70M in US sales, so it's highly likely that her claim includes this:

JerkfaceMcGee: She's a featured artist on a lot of other albums as well that are not her own. Like a lot of female vocalists gone pop she did a ton of vocals in the edm/electronic space before managing to break out on her own. Im guessing those are being factored in.

For example, she was a featured artist on a BTS song which had 5M in certified units worldwide. Can she count that among records she "sold"? Arguably, yes.

Well, just considering her work as lead artist... the problem comes in how you normalize the sales of music across history, where how people bought packaged music has differed so much.

At the beginning of the rock/pop era, "released" singles were what people primarily purchased.  Then a few decades in, albums, containing multiple songs.  And now we've moved back to single songs, but not just those "released" but counting a whole "album" of downloads each for their individual tracks.  And streaming complicates this a little.

Right now Spotify's charts are dominated by like 10+ Harry Styles and 10+ Bad Bunny tracks.  Where previously we'd just consider this all one single album as an entry into the charts.  None of this is "wrong"... it just needs to be normalized.

Or else you're just padding stats because things are "purchased" in a different manner.

And you also have the idea of "ownership" of your music vs. just streaming and what that means.
