I've got like four versions of that movie sitting around:
Blu-Ray official version
Despecialized Edition
Revisited
Silver Screen Edit

I vary on which one I rewatch at any given time.

Before acting in Total Recall, Arnold Schwarzenegger may or may not have been a secret agent on Mars.

She didn't act in Episode IV.

In the 90s i had no tv. I didn't get one until 2017.
But I did a lot of commercial work. B rolls, and hawking banks, and cars, locally.
I was kind of an unknown celebrity.
It was a weird time.

Then I got into music. And that is the best way to keep invisible.

The audio on the one without Episode 4 is god awful.

I dunno, feels to me that people would pay Disney chunks of cash for a 4k version of what was shown in the cinema back in '77

But, then. They would have paid Lucasarts the same and they never bothered.

No wonder there is a plot inconsistency between Rogue One and her movies.

syrynxx: I was clearing out a storage space today and came across "Splinter of the Mind's Eye", a great book, but being as it was published before Empire, it had a bit where Luke was lusting after Leia.

https://www.amazon.com/Splinter-Minds-Eye-Star-Wars/dp/0345320239

I quite enjoyed it.

There was recently a thread about the book and I learned there was a comic adaptation, so I downloaded that for a nostalgia-fueled read.  Through Comixology, also now on Amazon.

I'm pretty sure if she had seen any of the earlier episodes she never would have starred in Star Wars.
I mean the production quality alone was terrible, compared to those 3.

It is technically incorrect. In 1977 Carrie Fisher was in "Star Wars". There was no such thing as "Episode IV - A New Hope".

It probably was made before 1980 when the movie's title was retroactively changed from Star Wars to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope for the release of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

For a large number of us in our early to mid forties she's the first girl we ever loved.

Also, to (mis)quote a lady Farker when someone posted a screenshot of Carrie in a metal bikini setting the gun to blow up Jabba's barge, "Look at that ass. And the biatch is wearing flats."

I like Ep4 just fine, but her Magically Disappearing (and Also Bad) British Accent was not a good choice.

// and the scene in Jedi with her and Han where she tells him that Luke's her brother (um, spoilers I guess) has some of her worst line reading of the series
// still loads better than most of Ep4 Luke, though

Ep4 Luke was a whiny biatch. Casting Hayden as his father in the prequels was spot on.

And no, shooting dumpster rats in his El Camino didn't qualify him as a fighter pilot, let alone one that would be giving orders to actual trained pilots.

He was a Larry Sue.

That was on purpose. When she was speaking to Imperials like Tarkin and Vader, she used her High Coruscanti accent (her "Senator's accent") in her attempt to remain under the cover and protection of her status as a Senator.

When it became clear to her that the jig was up, the Senate was disbanded, and she was no longer going to be able to maintain the ruse of being "just" a Senator from Alderaan, she dropped the High Coruscanti accent and reverted to her own Alderaanian accent.

Many of the Senators from human or near-human worlds put on the High Coruscanti accent when acting in an official capacity as Senators, diplomats, etc.. Even Padme did it when she was Queen Amidala addressing the Senate, dropping it for her natural accent when she was just being Padme Naberrie, the handmaiden.

Oh, and let me remind people once again THERE ARE NO BRITISH ACCENTS IN STAR WARS OR GAME OF THRONES. So it can't be a "bad" British accent. There's no Great Britain in the Star Wars galaxy or Westeros. The accent you're complaining about is a F I C T I O N A L  accent.

No, it's a British accent. Just cause Lucas didn't designate a specific planet to be a bunch of beans for breakfast snagged toothed first cousin marrying royalty loving humps doesn't make it less British.

...which doesn't explain why she also spoke to Farm Boy and Scruffy Looking Nerf Herder using that accent, but only for that first movie. And then it never shows up again, until they needed the ADR for Rogue One.

// I fully believe (or did they ever admit?) that Lucas/Portman intentionally retcon'd the Bad British (fine, "Wooden") Accent for I-III to cover for the fact that Fisher dropped it after Ep4 because fake-British was on the way out as a highfalutin' dialect in general in the late 1970s
// but whatever headcanons it takes for immersion, right?

She didn't. Watch it again. When Luke shows up to rescue her she drops the High Coruscanti and is speaking in something that sounds a lot more like middle American, i.e. her Alderaanian accent.

That's literally what I do in real life.  My natural accent is unintelligible to people outside of my circle, which is why I have a "professional" toned down accent for work and casual interactions.

It's like a court language. Not that far fetched. Elites will do anything they can to distinguish themselves from commoners.

discoballer: It's like a court language.

Dialect, not language.

Which I could get behind, except that Mon Mothma also speaks Highfalutin (and I think other rebels do as well?) - in the Rebel meeting where they discuss how to blow up the Death Star* (which TBF is her only scene). Is that her first (and only) language or something?

So, again, if your headcanon is "well, Mon Mothma understands that this dialect is for 'official shiat'", that's great - it helps with immersion, and that's a wonderful thing for enjoying art - but it's still just headcanon; and for me Leia's accent just breaks that immersion a little with how bad it is (knowing what we do about British aristocratic accents in 1970s film).

I dunno, I guess that headcanon just feels - to me - like a cheap fix.

// WikderKWight, it has been a while since I've watched them so you may be (probably are, sounds like) right about her accent disappearing for casual speech (to Luke/Han)
* the one where they center the Bothan deaths and not Rogue squadron's, which I will remain salty about until I die - not that the Bothans got centered in ANH, but that Rogue One had 0 Bothans (save for a quick mention IIRC)

It is also a coded way to have and maintain the image of authority.
I should completely different when lecturing/professor or professional role than when I am with the people I grew up with.

Dang yankees are judgemental, yo.  A hint of your natural accent, and they deduct around a hundred IQ points per word.
