So they'll have to ... add really loud speakers that sound like assholes revving at 4am?

The future is electric: Harley Davidson has stopped making gas-powered motorcycles

Umm:

'Harley-Davidson said Thursday it would temporarily halt production of all gasoline-powered motorcycles for two weeks "out of an abundance of caution,"'

You just don't appreciate a good clickbait headline.

I hear them zooming around my neighborhood nightly and was having this exact mental conversation yesterday. Part of the fun of being a biker is annoying all the normals with your loud-ass tailpipe, and electric motors won't do that.

make me some tea: Part of the fun of being a biker is annoying all the normals with your loud-ass tailpipe,

Had a landord that wanted me out of my rent controlled apartment. Among her made up complaints was saying other residents complained my motorcycle was waking them up. Next time she was out front I pulled my honda vfr out of the garage. Thing sounded like a sewing machine. I asked her, "you think this is waking people up?"

Technically correct.

Abundance of caution, regulatory concern... I'm thinking a batch of something didn't pass incoming QC and it'll take two weeks to get parts that won't lead to a recall.

Frankly there are so many gas Harleys out there now nobody really needs a new gas one. They could convert to servicing and refurbishing the gas ones and leasing used ones out, and concentrate on e-bikes.

I'm kinda eager to see if LiveWire will be a market leader. It'd be nice to see the Motor Company be rewarded for trying something new.

Will they still leak oil?

I recall a report that conservatively estimated that 60% of all HD motorcycles had illegal modifications to the exhaust system, with removal of emissions controls a common modification.  HD itself was sued for selling mod kits that disabled emissions controls.

If HD was permanently banned from ever manufacturing another combustion engine vehicle, the world would be a much better place.

2 weeks IS technically IN the future.

I test rode a Livewire a month or so ago.

If I owned one I would immediately get arrested for unsafe roadway behaviors.

It also goes whhhrrrr-eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeee like the speeder bikes in Return of the Jedi.  I liked it, but it weighed a ton.

I don't know how the residents of Sturgis or Daytona can stand it, let alone invite it. Take that obnoxious sound and multiply by 100,000 24 hours a day for a full week and you lose your sanity and your hearing.

I was thinking that or...catalytic converters arrived with Platinem! instead of platinum...

The part in question causing the issue is the douche intake valve.

I'd imagine that if they're not directly making money off of the bikers or aren't otherwise required to be present during that week for public safety reasons (cops, firefighters, medics, etc.) they probably leave town.  Why stick around for that nonsense if your job didn't require it?

Daytona is a racing town and has always liked its engines loud and gnarly (both two and four wheel). If you choose to live there full time, you just accept it (or move to New Smyrna).

Or they faked the emission results and are now trying to find a way to make the bikes actually pass emission standards.

CSB Ducati used to sell a sports bike with an exhaust that "complied" with EU noise emission standards. Except those bikes couldn't be used on track days in certain race tracks because when tested at the track they failed the noise standards.

You'd be surprised what you can ignore as long as it's pretty constant - you edit it out

/doesn't make it good or anything
//just that you do get past it after a while
///like working in a loud environment - after a while it's background noise
////and shiat sounds weirdly quiet once you leave that area

Try living around Milwaukee, not just every five years for anniversaries but when it gets above 60 these chuckleheads are back at it until October.  And the four or five dealerships in the area have crap all the time that ties up traffic so these jagoffs can ride around and feel "free".

'Dafuq is a "muffler" and why do we need to install them on our bikes?'

Oh please oh please oh please... damnit!

I live 25 miles out of town along a river, with a boat landing right across the road from us. That road is about the only hilly, twisty road in an otherwise boring collection of straight, flat blacktop around here. So on every nice day, every Rob Halford Cosplay Orthodontist has to 'make a run' up our road, stop at the boat landing for a smoke/drink/talk to other bikers/grabass/whatever, enjoy lots of reving, and then really open her up as they leave. About every 5 minutes more or less, all. weekend. long.

Fark HD and their intentionally loud garbage. Is there really any other parallel? Something else that is intentionally low-tech and that loud? Maybe military jets, but they actually need to be loud. What else on earth is intentionally loud and awful, just to annoy others? Maybe Kid Rock?

They could throw all those loud pipes into an incinerator and the world would be a better place, instantly.
