He had some free time on his hands, but Quicksand is back together releasing new music. I say focus on that.

My band's main bassist just quit this week, out of the blue.  Band had been dormant two years due to covid. When we came out of the bunker and started up again and booked some gigs, he found he no longer had the stomach for all the rehearsals and practices and learning new songs. To be fair, he is in his late 60's/early 70's and wants to be an active grandpa to the new grandchild.

I could tell something was up because the few times he came to rehearsals, his playing sucked; like, he'd lost all his timing and could not find the pocket any more unless it was a dead-simple country 4:4 beat.  Every note he hit was off.  Anything with syncopation and he was just awful.  Luckily, we have a backup bass player; she's awesome, doubles on harmonica, baritone, and slide uke, and is picking up violin. Too bad she's not an octopus, but as long as we keep her happy, the band will more or less function. having two bassists made us more flexible, now we'll have to reduce the depth of our setlist, and we won't have backup if the one bassist gets sick.

We lost one other player last year, to a medical condition, (COPD), he couldn't sing but was a really great electric soloist. Our only one. i'm a strummer, not apicker. I'm learning, slowly, but mostly I sing lead and play rhythm.

Another one of the gals in the band, our youngest one, quit over masking and vaccine issues, (super churchy, concealed carry red-hat elementary school teacher).  And I think one more will quit because she's missed eight practices in a row, often for legit reasons, but, not always. She also met an awkward moment at the band xmas party, when she confessed to being anti-vac and anti-mask mostly because her grown-but-failed-to launch son was an anti-masker and wouldn't take any orders from his mom while living in her house like Eric Cartman.  So of course she just caught Covid, and will miss two more weeks of practice. At this point, she's a liability, trying to walk into our live gigs to do stuff she hasn't ever seen or rehearsed with us before, and all our back catalog, she hasn't practiced in a year... she has great skills, but i hate that she counts on the skills saving ehr ass when all it would have taken is coming to a few rehearsals....  I think she wants to quit but is too shy to do it, so is dragging her ass to force someone in the band to "fire" her instead is her strategy.

So we went from 11 down to a shaky six or seven for gigs.

This is my first band, so, I guess it's normal and usual. But we're like The Commitments: on the cusp of greatness, but perhaps doomed to break up with fame and money just out of reach.

I've got a hobby band on the side; me and rotating pickup players, strictly studio stuff.  I may need to start growing that project as insurance.

Yeah when your band says they're laying you off because they're spending too much money on storage space...and you, that's when you know you aren't being appreciated.  You should be at least the first line *above* storage space on their balance sheet.

2022-05-23 4:08:02 AM
Doesn't management/the accountant look at everything and everyone as different line items to begin with? I mean, I hope that it's like our expired Santa said and he was above the storage locker, but to get a valuation/balance sheet/know how things are going, you kind of have to reduce everything to various figures.  Sure it would be nice if next to each member was 'Priceless'. But a bass player who also sings with the stage presence of Freddy Mercury 'is' going to be valued higher than the guy who stands near the back (playing his ass off) and trying to look cool/disinterested.

According to TFA, when he signed on, he wasn't expecting Deftones to be a permanent gig anyway.

The "White Pony" days, where they sell 100,000 copies in the first week, then go on a stadium tour, are over. They're headed for the nostalgia circuit for the rest of their careers, so they're thinking about cutting costs, and that might mean having a guitar player record the bass parts on the records and just hire a bass player for tours.

Sucks they he got the Newstead treatment. Ohms was one of the two albums that got me through 2020 along with the Hum album that year.
This came out a little earlier and is much lesser known but fits in quite well with those two in the "heavy shoegazer" vibes. This hits my 90s nostalgia buttons and i love it for that.

They're pushing 50 and their main audience isn't far behind. It's inevitable.

People who talk shiat about bass players are either talentless idiots who couldn't create an original thought, or acoustic guitar-only choads who play in coffee shops and dive bars for pity-change.

Anyone who's spent time in a real band, putting in the effort, isn't going to talk shiat about any position that makes the songs happen. They're ALL important.

/except tambourine players.

Hm? The Deftones are still successfully touring. Yeah maybe not as successful as the late 90s but pretty much the same success they've had for 20 years.

Yeah, I know, I've been hearing them for generations. It's hysterical.

Ronnie Wood was a member of the Stones for almost 20 years before they finally made him a financial partner (and that was only after Bill Wyman quit).

Yeah.  I'm with you.  Not sure what's up with the seriousness of the post there.  Plus, we all know bassist and drummer jokes.  Don't know any tambourine player jokes.
