I always volunteer for a half dozen new projects so they'll be two weeks behind when I leave.

Fascinating. I didn't know you could do this. Not proxy voting - holding both a state executive and federal legislative office.

Seriously, what was I supposed to do, do my job at 100% till the very end? Which I did, by the way, but also, I was handing off stuff to my co-workers, cuz they were going to have to do it after I left.

Ya I think doing handoff properly is what is expected. You really should stop doing any day-to-day since you do have to hand it all off.

That is some farked up shiat. If you get told to go home while you're on notice, that's an instruction from the employer so that makes it work not leave, where I live that's normal paid time, not a leave entitelment. Your leave entitlements get paid out at the end of your notice.

I've seen workers told to go home once they've put their notice in but the company's paying them to do that. It's invariably the workers who would otherwise be in the office biatching about management. It doesn't eat into their leave entitlements, those are paid out.

Wow are American workers ripped off. No carer's leave, no parental leave, sick leave and holiday leave are the same thing there as I understand it. Australian workers are much better looked after, by law. Employers can't contract out of their legal obligations.

If the state laws don't prohibit it, it's doable. A number of states let you run for both state office and federal office at the same time. Some states even let you run for two federal offices (Wisconsin, where Paul Ryan was running for both his House seat and running for VP).

Yep, at my job if you give two weeks notice during your probationary period (when you can be let go for any reason) there is a good chance you get walked right out the door. If you needed that two weeks of pay and can't start your new job early, you are screwed. It's why I tell people to just give 2 minutes notice at the end of their last day.

I had a meeting scheduled my last day of work at the last place I was. They tried to assign me an action item. I said "Good luck with that. As soon as I hang up this phone, I'm gone forever." I have no idea if it ever got done.

2 weeks notice should only be given if you like your employer or coworkers. Otherwise, just start your new (presumably better paying) job as soon as possible. Why cost yourself money just to be nice to assholes?

Exactly. It's likely you've never seen any of those people before you got the job, and you'll likely never see them again after you quit. Just quit and disappear ... unless, like you said, you like them.

The only reason is potential lack of recommendations and/or bad word of mouth in the industry.

My co-workers in dairy frozen gave me shiat all the time. Called me 'peter-puller' because they didn't think i pulled my weight. Meanwhile I was the only one scheduled that worked Saturdays and Sunday's. The days everyone was doing the bulk of their shopping. I stayed late to finish and fill stock those days. Got a talking to for not taking breaks sometimes those days because of work to be done. At the end I hated that job.

My last two weeks were in the summer. I was chasing a girl then. So, i called in sick a few of those days as a fark you all and went to summerfest with her all day. Got there early enough to get hand stamps and saw a bunch of bands. She liked snow cones. Spent a lot of money on snow cones.

That was a fun summer.

CSB-sort've: At a gourmet market in Philly, I made fresh pasta on a large machine. Average day could turn out about 400 pounds-some of it going to three of their associated restuarants. New manager is hired and the proverbial writing was on the wall of: "I need to exert my power and what not"-I tried several weeks to fit into their new way of running things-not a good fit for me. That and they told me they'd already had started to look for someone to replace me. "Ok, would you like me to train them? Show them, as the person did for me, how to do this work?"  "No."  Alrighty, gave the two weeks notice. Stopped by to see what the new person was like-oh man, they did not look like they even knew what they were doing. The chefs at the three restuarants were furious, as he couldn't make basic pasta correctly-too thick, fell apart, ragged. Ok-here's the gross part-you have been warned! They fired the guy after he ran his fingers through the machine. Yep. Quite the bloody mess according to former co-workers still there.

"Fark It, Got My Orders".

(Presumably, to be deployed / reassigned somewhere else.)

In my state, if you put in your notice and are told to leave before it expires, you're eligible to collect unemployment because giving notice is not an allowed fireable offense.

I fully confess that I was in slacker mode for the last two months I was at Boeing...after receiving my 60 day lay-off notice.

And I did nothing for the last two weeks since I scheduled a minor surgery around that time.

There is no way I was going to do a damn thing in the third quarter financial update.

We used to call that a "2 day" notice, as in "I quit TO-DAY."

Interesting, but that sounds correct. Unemployment is denied if you are fired "for cause" and giving a resignation notice and then being fired is not anything you did to cause the firing like an actual cause to immediately terminate employment.

How long can you keep pulling those benefits? If you give a two-week notice and file for funemployment, do you only get the benefits through when you would have left employment? In my state there is a one-week waiting period for funemployment benefits so that amounts to maybe one week of benefits and then you're done? Or can you draw the benefits continuing going foward, past the date you were going to quit but you got booted early?

So what's the best way to go about this since I want to leave my current job I've been at for 5 years, and it's pretty much the only professional job I got, so do I just forgo recommendations and send out a updated CV and hope someone has enough interest to contact me without going through a call list that will tell everyone I plan on farking off to better paying pastures?

Kinda. There's this Boomer fark in my office who's been coasting since like 3 years ago because "I have a ton of experience, and I'm gonna land a better-paying gig here pretty soon." I genuinely have no idea how he hasn't been fired. He comes in late, he does zero preparation when meeting with clients, and I get tons of complainants about him. I've tried talking to him several times and he always loses his shiat. This is a real iMessage conversation we had last time I spoke to him about his performance:

Him: "You're not that good. You think you are, but you're not. I've seen way better. Why don't you go over to HQ, and take a look at my resume! You'll see what I'm really capable of."

Me: "I'm not even a little bit interested in seeing your resume. I just want you to do your job."

Him: "I hereby retract my offer for you to see my resume."

I can't fire him because he technically belongs to another branch and he just makes the office miserable, so I've been leaving him to be a turd. My superior doesn't want to deal with him either because his boss is apparently a raging peener as well. When he finally leaves, I'm going to show him my paystub. Hopefully he doesn't explode. I don't want to get Boomer on my shirt.

I live in the U.S.
Gave my boss two weeks notice.
He replied that in Europe employees give 3 weeks.
Yes, yes he was a manic-depressive idiot.
I turned and walked away.
