But he was positioned as her academic superior and that was a funky power dynamic.

In the movie it was handled with aplomb. He wasn't aggressive or predatory, she was clearly the character who drove their interest.

They were adults, consenting and not first cousins (so not red state Republicans obviously). They were both working scientists in their field.

Also academics /scientists /nerds, etc. often have mating patterns similar to dwarves: highly competitive inside their fields, oblivious to social norms, once they decide on someone, it's ride or die, simply because the effort of finding a career-compatible mate takes so much effort for professionals, they can't afford the distraction to keep shopping around for a better deal.

In short, cut out the farking ageism; they were both professionals.

I dunno, but that seems way too creepy to be true. Btw, 'Indiana' is 22 years older than Calista Flockhart.

5 years. Supposed to be 14 and 9 in the first movie and when they get married it's age 24 and 19.

So I assume when Lucas originally wrote it Anakin was 9 and Padme was 55.

The character could have been any age, I suppose. But the actress was 23.

Even as a kid, I thought she was older than that.

Dern was just 23 when she starred in Steven Spielberg's 1993 film, while her co-star Neill was 44.

Not according to imdb.  I got curious because I thought "you mean to tell me she was 16 when she made Blue Velvet??" That would probably be more farked up than a relationship with Sam Neill.  Per imdb, she was 26 when Jurassic Park came out, 25/26 when filming.

I notice a lot of young women, who like to date older guys in their 20s, discover that there are a lot of ethical problems with the dating model as they get older.

I also knew a lot of guys in their 20s, back then, who knew it was creepy as hell, but have seemed to have forgotten as they gotten older.

Maybe.  But, we don't give kids rights, and or in put in house hold choices. So do we really care about such things.
Part me under theses worries about power dynamics but part me want to roll my eyes.
Why?
Because its only discussed in two types of situations and none other.
Which is farking disingenuous.
Give me a break.
Reason 400 I don't buy people's claims they want equality.

It's also rare for a 23 year old to have a Ph.D and be an established researcher. At that age most people are just starting their doctorates, and still have to do a post-doc or two, so I just assumed she was playing an older character. Most actors have an "age range" they can play and it never occurred to me Dr. Sattler was 23.

(IIRC) the director was getting over a brake up during that time. And that that relationship has a similar age gap. (I don't think same)

"And it was only now, when we returned in a moment of cultural awareness about the patriarchy, that I was, like, 'Wow! We're not the same age?'" she said.

People of different ages fall in love all the time.  My father is 14 years older than my stepmother.  My wife is 10 years older than me.  You couldn't even tell the age difference between Sam Neill and Laura Dern.
This is not "patriarchy".  It's a plot point in a dumb, but entertaining, movie.  Two people falling in love in the face of adversity.  Movie goers like that sh*t.  I don't even recall age being mentioned in that movie.   For Christ's sake, Newman was eaten alive by genetically engineered dinosaurs.  Samuel L Jackson was awesome as always

Actually I think in the future 20 something will still be seen as some kind of childhood.  We're on the brink of labeling it something and having laws define it. It's coming.
I personally don't know to what extent I agree or disagree.
Because I for one hate that so many people support trying kids as adults, just because of the crime. And not the child.

I don't remember thinking she was 23. I had her at early 30s or possibly very late 20s.  It came out when I was a kid, so maybe my perspective was a bit skewed.

As to whether it's a bit creepy, yeah.  Nothing illegal or anything, but at 39 I would feel creepy dating a 23 year old, and that doesn't even factor in a mentor/mentee relationship.

None of this really changes the movie though.  Characters are allowed to be flawed, particularly in the context of the time without it upending everything.  From what I remember, Dern fawned over him, and he initially acted disinterested.  But get put in a crazy situation with a cute, brilliant, 23 year old that admires you and, yeah..... I get it.
