Finally was able to see Strange. I loved the obvious Raimi shots in that movie. And I could watch the Illuminati getting farked up all day.

Also, not a theater movie, but Chip n Dale was pretty fun. Probably better than a straight Rescue Rangers movie would have been. Somehow still not quite as believable as Roger Rabbit, though. Not many "bump the lamp" moments in CnD.

Men is an indie horror film coming out before Memorial Day with about 1/10 the budget (not even considering advertising budget) as the other big hitters still out. It's going to be just fine.

I saw Everything Everywhere All at Oncelast night.  It was the best movie I've seen in a long time. Funny, moving, exciting, and weird as hell.  Michelle Yoah should get get the Best Actress Academy Award and this should get Best Picture.  Dunno if they're brave enough, though.

The thing that's going to hurt it more than hesitation to reward weird* is that the movie came out so early in the year. The Academy generally only pays attention to movies from the fall or later

*A movie about a woman farking a fish won Best Picture not that long ago don't forget

The one big exception to that rule is Silence of the Lambs, which came out in February and then ended up sweeping the Big 5 awards, being only one of three movies to do that (the others being It Happened One Night and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest).

I mean seriously can you imagine Steve Rogers saying: "They gave me a vasectomy. It's ... efficient. They turned me into a monster, so I must destroy the multiverse!"

I was expecting more multiverse. Outside of the one montage leaping through several that was partly shown in the trailers, there was surprisingly little multiverse hopping.

Not to mention the only other universe you actually see, the main differences were the colour of traffic lights, pizza balls, and which superheroes are around.

/Maybe we can get a Sliders/Quantum Leap type show with her jumping into various universes to try and find her moms.

In the end Doctor Strange was a solid Marvel movie to me.

It had some stupid plot elements. It dragged in parts. But it had a number of great moments and the usual funny banter and was entertaining to watch.

I was actually happy to see Wanda as the bad guy, but it really felt jarring with the last time we saw her being determined to redeem herself and suddenly being straight up evil.

Over all, pretty much on par with the first Doctor Strange: little bit better through most of it, but not as good of a final ending. I still say that the best final "battle" in Marvel is still Strange repeatedly getting killed in the time loop until Dormammu gives up.

I could go for a Sliders-type show with her and a couple sidekicks.  Although I guess that would basically give us What If again.

I really hope she at least gets a supporting role in a D+ show.  Her character was absolutely wasted in MoM.  She was just an anthropomorphized McGuffin.

You can't compare the two.

Dr Strange 2 is just 'More Marvel', which is usually fine (but not always, e.g. The Eternals).

Everything, Everywhere, All at Once was very well thought out, far better acted, and had exactly the right balance of actors acting and special effects.

Obviously not part of the box office since it got a straight Disney+ release, but I thought Rescue Rangers was pretty fun. Pretty much exactly what I expected, basically a Lonely Island homage to Who Framed Roger Rabbit. My son really liked it, even though I had to explain a couple of the jokes to him.

I'll be shocked if "Everything" doesn't get a ton of nominations and Yeoh sweeps every acting award.

This is a rare film that both critics and audiences love. The love for the movie is so intense that it's selling tickets week after week purely based on word of mouth - there's no marketing campaign behind it. And, everyone is going to want to see Yeoh win.

$3 million for Men is pretty good, given it's going to have a very small audience. It's even more deliberately obscure than a David Lynch film. Although from reading a couple of interviews with the director, it's clear he's never seen the Takashi Miike film Gozu, because the ending of Men reminds me very much of that ending. But he never mentions it, instead saying he came up with the idea himself after watching Attack on Titan.

The only thing I didn't like somewhat about the movie is it's only told from one perspective, and she falls into the unreliable narrator trope. So you never really know what's going on.

Plenty of people had a problem with Black Widow not being given an equal sendoff, or frankly, Stark being given such a big one. Sure, he sacrificed himself, but where was he in the five years prior? Widow was holding the Avengers together and should have been the better known hero to the world at large. But most viewers got that the big sendoff for "Tony" was really a heartfelt goodbye to RDJ, whose first Iron Man was the proof of concept that allowed the MCU to happen, and provided the lynchpin character that the series was built around. Never mind that in-universe, Stark is the asshole who nearly killed the planet with his Ultron robot, sent a bunch of heroes into lockup or hiding thanks to his aggressive support of the accords, failed to stop Thanos (you know he'd be villified for that, fairly or not), and bailed on everything and everyone right after the Snap. The fickle nature of public opinion wouldn't have upheld him as such a great guy all those years, and his final sacrifice would have been grudgingly taken by many as "Yeah, he needed to kill himself to make up for all the shiat he'd done."

Lucky for Iron Man the MCU isn't the real world. Our 24-hr news channels would have had him for lunch.

Seriously? Because you can fit all of Marvel's female heroes (quite a few of whom were secondary characters) into one scene. Piling all the guys together would have looked like a shot of the bleachers at the Super Bowl.

Besides, what was the big trio battle of Cap, Thor and Iron Man unloading on Thanos but a feature of the most important male heroes with their own solo movies?

In general I agree with what you are saying, but I have no problem believing Iron Man's death would be treated as much more of a big farking deal by the public.

Stark was a rich, famous, powerful guy before becoming a superhero. He actively sought out attention and was the face of The Avengers and superheroes in general for many years. And he died in a highly prominent, visible way sacrificing himself for final victory.

Romanoff was a spy and assassin for most of her life who presumably tried to avoid attention and downplay things. And while she sacrificed herself to defeat, it was on another planet where only one person knew what happened and he was unlikely to go shouting it from the rooftops.

Saw Doctor Strange this past week..my first "in-person" movie in a theater since January of 2020. A weekday matinee only had about 20 people in it (and the theater seats 700, so plenty of distance, obviously).

Look, I love Doctor Strange and have since reading his stories in the Silver Age of Marvel comics and I love how Cumberbatch nails the character...so, yeah, I enjoyed the hell out of the movie...but I can see why most folks consider it more to be Wanda's film than his. Loved seeing a lot of Wong...and the Illuminati were a nice addition (although I am glad they didn't really try to show Mr Fantastic's superpower because no matter how they try to show ole Stretch, it's gonna look dumb as hell). Couldn't stay for the mid and end credits scene due to a phone call, but read what they were and will watch them when it hits Disney+. Was hoping for more "multi-verses" (a la when Brian and Stewie jumped from one to the other) but I also applaud the film's relative brevity compared to the abominably tedious and overlong "The Batman" which I streamed this week. What a shiatfest that was.

Oh I like things. I also don't like things. I think I've been a bit curmudgeonly lately because I've been waiting a good chunk of my life to see a live action Moon Knight show, and feel like what Disney actually produced was done simply to mock me.

I was a big fan of the first Doctor Strange movie, and heard that this one was more about Wanda (which wasn't actually the case), so I went into it with trepidation. Was delighted, however, with what I saw.
