So, its strange that the teams made a choice which got them both further into the finals and eliminated another country who would have given either team difficulty?

I would think that would constitute "match fixing", and be subject to sanctions on *both* teams.

Looks like those two teams are facing each other again today, in a winner-take-all battle for, uh, fifth place.

Maybe they'll actually try this time, no pun intended.

I guess you can bet on international rugby otherwise someone might be getting a visit from some leg breakers.

We've had this explained perfectly in Freakonomics, for the last few farkers who haven't read that book, here's a summary (but go buy the book, it's paradign-altering stuff):

While that's shiatty (especially since it harmed my nation's team), the link for the grievous injury from the Wasps v Sale was more relevant, since my streaming package showed the replay in question when the officials reviewed it, so I was morbidly curious how bad it really ended up (ended up being a fibula fracture)

bah, I almost quit playing sports when my high school decided our best chance of winning was not to play.

Four corners offense, pass the ball around or just hold it until you got an easy shot.

I recall the game I nearly quit

1st quarter: 1-3
Half-time: 8-9
End Game: 29-27

this was high school basketball where the previous year under a diff coach we averaged 70 a night. We just stood at half court and the other team let us. full minutes of just players standing on the court. booed by our own fans.

hard to have good stats to show colleges when there are no stats in any games.

This is like calling someone stupid because they figured out they can make more on unemployment than they can down at the local fast food joint.

I dunno, I've seen some rugby players watch American football and they realize they are hitting MUCH harder because they have gear. It's much higher speed.

Yup, rugby tackles are the wrap someone up and pull them down to the ground type.  You don't get the crash violently into someone at full speed type of tackle you get in the NFL.  If one rugby player tackled another in that way in a rugby match, neither of them would get up.
