CARD CHAOS
Visa and Mastercard outage leaves frustrated customers unable to make payments

Later in the article: Downdetector also saw a surge of reports from Mastercard users about issues using their cards as well - but the company later confirmed their network has been operating normally.

Hopefully this isn't someone attempting hacktivism. Farking with CC payments doesn't hurt the card companies - it's neither going to make anyone not buy something they were going to, nor is it going to stop them from using a card to do it, so you're not hurting the company or their profits in any measurable way. What you ARE doing is making people late on their bills, getting late fees charged, and quite possibly getting some elderly person's AC shut off on a 120 degree day in Arizona. So yeah, find a better target.

Oooooh, think a little bigger. If the payment processing network was down, it might be SWIFT related.

You know, SWIFT? The payment network that Russia was kicked off that isolated their economy from the rest of the world?

If so, this is indeed bigger than missing your Amazon cc payments, like Amazon can't buy fuel to fly their jets big, or UPS or truck drivers can't gas up their trucks to deliver food to you big.

While Russia attacking SWIFT would not be at all surprising, something tells me that would be news all over the world, and would lead to calls to cut Russia out of the internet entirely.

So yeah, I definitely agree it's possible, but if they start having regular success with it, I think -everyone- is going to hear about it.
