(ESPN)   Bill Laimbeer will never coach again?? [commence the parade] ... oh ... he won't rule out a future in basketball. God dammit I hate this universal timeline   (espn.com) divider line
More: Sad, Women's National Basketball Association, Bill Laimbeer, former Las Vegas Aces coach, head coach of the WNBA, New York Liberty, San Antonio franchise, easy decision, second-best record

Like I've said before imagine the timeline where Arvydas Sabonis comes over when he's drafted. Rests the Achilles injiry. Then he plays in 87. The Pistons certainly don't beat Portland for the title in 90, I think Portland could have won it all in 88 with Sabonis on that team, and Bill has his brains battered out when he tries to pull his BS on a farking giant from the Soviet Union.

Was this game decent?  We had a SNES, but I never played it.

Basically, it was a slapped-together basketball game where there was no such thing as fouls. The primary way of getting a turnover was simply body-checking the dribbler. Bombs also randomly spawned on the court.

Aaahhh Bill Laimbeer. The man who put the "Bad" in The Bad Boys.

/I wish him well in his retirement.

I wonder if Laimbeer is always looking over his shoulder, expecting to see Robert Parish getting ready to smack him down.

It's amazing that people considered Parish tough. Why was he afraid to confront Laimbeer face to face? Bird wasn't. Barkley wasn't. Hell, even Isiah wasn't in practice. But Robert Parish was terrified of Laimbeer.

agreed.    I miss the NBA when there when they allowed actual defense.   Even most modern nba fans agree the 80# and early 90s BB was the most fun to watch.

if parish was ever going to smack him down it would have to be while Laimbeer had his back turned.

300+ coaching wins in a league that doesn't play a large number of games, along with three titles. If you told me when he was playing that he would become a good coach of women, I wouldn't have believed you.

We do? Most of us weren't old enough to even watch in the 80s. The most boring era for a lot of fans was the early 00s and that was low scoring and defensive teams were winning titles (Pistons, Spurs).

I agree that it's too soft now in many ways but that doesn't mean it should go back to being a slog either, find a proper balance. The 80s were actually a high scoring era, btw

I think the main issue is that, due to EVERYONE'S reliance on threes and the fact that, if a team gets hot, well, the game is over. It's just blowouts back and forth except when the refs are shaping the game and there's a key injury like last night.

And yeah, defenses now are way goddamn better than at any point in NBA history. They were just allowed to get away with a lot more and teams couldn't shoot back in the early 2000s.

Basically the generation that grew up idolizing Jordan sucked at basketball 'cause they had all the selfishness and one-on-one mentality without the talent.

Kinda like how now everyone's taking after Steph Curry, but no one else is as good, so it's all crap.
