A 16 oz. jar of peanut butter may contain up to 136 insect fragments and 4 rodent hairs.  The more you know.

Well, I have a jar of JIF with the lot number they state, but it's 2/3'rds empty already.

Maybe I'm salmonella-proof?

Used to eat Peter Pan peanut butter growing up. Nowadays, I buy Teddie. That said, I bought some fresh ground peanut butter from a local grocer last week. Can't beat the taste of the fresh stuff.

How are you decoding the lot numbers? The recall notice on jif.com/recall gives 7 digit lot codes. On our jar, below the Use By Date, it has a sequence of 5 digits, 3 digits, 3 digits:40. I assume the 40 is because it is a 40 oz. jar.

Not even the official FDA announcement explains it.  All of my jars have 11-digit numbers, I'm guessing the first seven digits are the lot numbers, as they start with 127. All lower than the recall.

The FDA and the article both give 10 digit codes, on the UPC. Not below the use by date.

I'm wondering if this was precipitated by the same relaxation of regulations that led to the baby formula recall.

Or, I'll pretend I didn't see the recall and try and get salmonella and see ya in court.

The barcode is not the lot number. The number in the barcode is the same as the UPC in human-readable form.

Since there's some confusion, check out the FDA link directly:
https://www.fda.gov/food/outbreaks-foodborne-illness/outbreak-investigation-salmonella-peanut-butter-may-2022

J.M. Smucker Company has voluntarily recalled certain Jif brand peanut butter products that have the lot code numbers between 1274425 - 2140425, only if the first seven digits end with 425 (manufactured in Lexington, KY).

Doesn't matter how long your lot code is. Just look at the first 7 digits. Make sure you're looking at the lot code, NOT the UPC code. The lot code is printed under the "Best By" date.

The UPC codes are 10 digits. That tells scanners what the product is. The lot codes tell us whether the specific container is affected. The FDA and Jif both give 7 digit numbers for lot codes.

This thread prompted me to check the jar of peanut butter I bought last week, and used some of in a baked dish.  Sure enough, it's on the list.  Good news is no on who had eaten any of the dish has gotten sick.  Bad, we used some of the peanut butter to get our dogs to take their pills yesterday.  They, also, do not appear to be showing any signs of being sick.

The peanut butter has since been thrown out, and replaced with a new jar of Skippy. Dammit.

With Skippy, you'll find unwanted chunks of metal in their jars.

Better off getting store brand. Aldi's has pretty much the same ingredients as Jif, but not made by Smucker.

One persons unwanted chunks of metal, is another persons wanted chunks, that is what makes it super chunky like the label says.

I harvest my own peanuts, on Jimmy Carter's farm, I give them individual Turing tests & astoundingly, 39% pass; the lower 61st percentile get ground to smithereens and blendered into a fine paste not unliek raw scrapple
