Samsung rarely innovates, mostly just copies.  LG is same.  If there's no one for them to copy something from, then they'll start futzing around to try to find new things to sell, but otherwise they are copiers, through and through.

.....

my comment about the article:

So... Verge is telling us that we could potentially bankrupt apple if all of us got together and spent $49 on their repair kit?

And he doesn't place a $1200 hold on my card.

Well you need to put a $1200 deposit down too but I bet you could get more than $1200 for it on ebay.

Speak for yourself. I have a slim phone in a chunky case with an extra battery.

Ah the good old days, when my phone didn't HAVE a battery and I could actually "Hang Up" on someone by slamming down the receiver.

This is an outrage and a threat to my masculinity.  I hope Tucker covers this important issue very soon.

End user battery replacement should be a mandatory feature.  Moving from my old flip phone to a smart phone was awesome.  Moving from my first smart phone to one with a better screen and processor, etc. was worth it.

But if I have a phone with a failing battery, I should be able to swap it out with a generic replacement and recycle the old battery... not toss the entire phone.  We're watching landfills grow while still encouraging unnecessary waste so companies can sell upgrades more frequently.  It's criminally stupid.

There is some benefit to restricted hardware and software options creating a more homogeneous system which helps lower the bug count.  What it is not worth is the premium Apple fans pay, not even caring about the real benefits because, as you say, it's a cult.

And of course it's conspicuous consumption so they can show off how much they can afford to spend on the latest popular toy.   The same reason people buy luxury cars.

I have a digital camera with an easy to open port for removing and replacing the battery.  I see no reason why smart phones cannot be conifgured to do the same.

Chief Superintendent Lookout: I see no reason why smart phones cannot be conifgured to do the same.

They'll tell you "because we can use custom battery shapes to use available space and keep the phone thinner, because we can glue it in place to reduce the chance of a connector issue, and because it helps keep the case seal intact and reduce water or dust intrusion".

It's all crap.

$1200USD is actually a pretty good price for all of that kit.

Would make it super easy to start an Apple repair shop, buy a dozen batteries of each type, rent the gear, don't return it.

Fork over the $1200.

Here's a video showing how to replace the battery on a Windows Phone Lumia 630.

The video is 31 seconds long, and the first six seconds and the last six seconds are the channels logo.

Nokia Lumia 630 Repair - Back and Battery Removal
Youtube LNnM_dIjs-8

The 630 is one point five millimetres thicker than todays iPhone.  When you consider that the iPhone has a camera that sticks out and that if you include that the Lumia is actually thinner then I'd pick the Lumia every time.
Plus, you could easily swap different colour bodies, not bulky add on cases, the actual body, so you could get a cool looking phone and again be far thinner than the iPhone. And swap a battery in under a minute.

/Still miss my Windows Phone....

JFC this thread is so AMERICAN. Fark you all.

The news, in the article, is that a RIGHT requires a $1,200 deposit, and the RIGHT only lasts 7 days because the tools necessary for he RIGHT mus be returned MUST BE RETURNED in 7 days.

The word RIGHT in American law is NOT A RIGHT.

This is an example of why American IP laws and tech related laws must be destroyed by other countries. We have to to compeletly patriate the legal and production systetms, or else we must shred our treaties with he USA. Because tthe US tech sector has alred succeeded in shredding the concept of law, via the concept of righs.

The first 16 people in this thread are bad, on the inside. They are truly bad persons. JFC, they do not recognize rights, either for people or property.

Good idea until the license for the embedded firmware "expires" after a week, requiring you to pay another $1200 for a week's license.

I'm not anti-Apple.  I own two Apple devices, not counting two more outdated laptops that each served me for 10 years before I needed to replace them.  (They still work, but can't handle updated software.  The older one can barely run the latest builds of NetHack...)  As an engineer, I admire and am willing to pay for the superior engineering and construction.  It's not flawless, but it is superior.

But I am definitely anti-Apple when it comes to their hostility to user serviceability.

And don't get me started on their decisions to remove DVD-ROM drives and phono jacks.  I still rock an iPhone 6S+ just for the headphone jack.

I'm anti-Apple completely and utterly.

And I have an S10e with a headphone jack.

None of that equipment seemed to have any software or connectivity. The only problem would be the garbage Apple step to call them up and have them remote into your phone in diagnostic mode to pair the hardware IDs because Apple is a steaming pile of shiat.

"This battery we supplied to you is not genuine because fark you, that's why"

Just fire up an ad campaign that instils the message "Not genuine is okay". Then use Apple kit to replace parts as a service and skip the pairing step.

... well, you need to authorize $1200.  So it's not even a sunk cost, unless you make the equipment disappear.  Just spend $50 and they're probably spending a few hundred on shipping that much stuff there and back again.

Dude, you do realise that there would be no camera bulge at all if they just spent that extra millimetre on a casing that could be making battery swapping a bit easier? (or house better cooling, battery, etc)

It's kinda weird to me that everyone hates the camera bump, yet the main love is the thinness.

I don't make the design rules. But I'm very certain that if there was a substantial market for a user replaceable battery, Apple and Samsung wouldn't just be leaving that money on the table.

/although I imagine they'd be charging a massive premium for your extra batteries as well

I don't think most people can afford to pay that much for a phone every year or two and pay for it over time, and therefore, pay even more for their stupid toy. Not to mention how many people break their phone screens.

I am not sure I see the benefit of restricted environments and proprietary equipment.

The toughest battery replacement I've done was on an LG tablet.  Had to pay $5.98 for a set of five tools to pry the thing apart. I could had gotten one tool for $3.98, but I figured it would be like changing a bicycle tire with one iron.

First: the manufacturers do make replaceable batteries for phones that are specialized or allowed to be heavier. Embedded batteries simply make more sense for people who just want a phone. Keep in mind that the metal casing around your mobiles and laptops are part of the safety system -- lithium batteries can and do go into runaway if they're damaged.

Second: who cares if the kit is 80 pounds? You expect to carry this around to change the battery? Is that your stupid plan which proves how stupid apple is?

My S20 5G is both thicker and much larger than my old S4, S6 and S7.  Giving it a removable back and replaceable battery wouldn't make a bit of difference.

Now I personally haven't minded upgrading my phones because I like new tech. But using the excuse that the phone would be too thick is just a blatant lie by the manufacturers.

It's also a lie I've not heard before. The lie I've actually heard from cell manufacturers is that it's a trade-off between removable batteries and a water-proof case.

I don't get why people are so upset about this. There are Apple certified repair ships everywhere. It seems like there's one in every single mall I've ever been to. I dumped Apple years ago because of nonsense like this. They make money on you while you fix the defects in their products.
I changed the battery on my S9 and it cost all of...$20.
I smashed the glass back a couple years ago, and replacing that cost all of...$20.

Yes, some special tools were needed and there were lots of screws. They cost all of...nothing. Of course, the newer phones are probably a different story, so not exactly a fair comparison. But still easy compared to similar phones.

The more you understand about how reality actually operates, the more there is to be mad about. Sounds better than the assurion store that is at over a week trying to replace pixel battery after breaking the screen, breaking the camera (took days to diagnose), and installing a faulty new camera in the process.
