That dog needs to be taken away from the owner. Also, she needs to be banned from hiking. Second damn time this happened.

Although, I am impressed the dog was able to put up a fight so soon after the last attack.

I like this comparison, German Shepherd compared to Malinois.  tl;dw: one's a smart dog, the other is a meat missile with teeth.

And here my wife is rightly concerned about one of out mutts having a run-in with an opossum.  Mice, rats, squirrels (maybe).  Opossums and raccoons are right out.

They indicate that the dog may not liked to be groomed; mine hates it, but if you give him frozen peanut butter, you get about a 10 minute window where you can do whatever you want to him.

Best dog I had was a Belguin Malinois.  I would not say bitey but always had to have something in their mouth.  She did destroy stuffed animals except for her favorite, a platypus, after 6+ years the paper price tag attached with the little plastic hook was still in near mint condition on the animal. And the dog was a couple of orders smarter than the kids.  I would get another in a heartbeat!

I fostered a pup that turned out to be half mal.  She was an amazing dog, the most "on task" dog I've ever had.  Incredibly smart and trainable, very friendly, moved right into the "pack" with our other dogs.  However, being a 60 year old fat guy with bad knees I knew there was no way I could give her the activity she needed.  A Mal should be "worked" at least 3 hours a day or they get bored and they find things to do.  You really don't want a bored Malanois.

This is her at her forever home:

CSB: I have a buddy that lives with a maligator. Awesome dog.  He was trying to take a picture of a bird in a tree on a hike. What he got was a sort of brown black blur in a tree, because his dog ran up his back, jumped mayne 5 feet into the tree and ate the bird. He says 8 feet, but I saw the picture. 5 is still farking impressive.

Sheep herders in ID would put spike collard on their guard dogs so mountain lions and wolves who went for the neck would get a mouth full of razor sharp spikes.  That's wolf blood around his neck not dog blood.

My husband rents his art studio from a guy who had a Malinois. Gorgeous dog, friendly, so strong. But it was a bad match. The guy's daughter and grandkids lived on the property in a separate house and one of the granddaughters was afraid of the dog, etc. etc. bla bla bla excuses - he wound up keeping the dog tied up. Which is no life for any animal, much less a dog like a Malinois. He wound up giving it away, and I hope the pup is having a free and active life.

One time I went around the building to visit him (the dog, not the guy) and he was so happy to see someone he jumped all over me. I'm strong and not small, and I could barely fend him off, although admittedly I only had one hand free because as soon as his paws were on my chest my first impulse was to protect my chemo port.

Herding like collies or guarding like GSDs?

We have learned something here.
Dog protects human is still part of the Arrangement.
Hitting predators on the head with rocks still works.
So does hitting them on the head with something bigger and with better mechanical efficiency

Both.  If you read up on Malinois you'll see that they aren't recommended for families with small children because they tend to try to herd them when they wander away by nipping at their legs.

If you're interested in a badass guardian dog for herds, read up on the Turkish Kangal.  Those have an amazing history, one of the oldest recognized breeds.

Thought so.

They're importing Kangals into Africa as part of a project to protect endangered big cats.  Since the Kangals can scare off cheetahs and lions the farmers don't have to kill the cats to protect their herds.

That's right...they make lions think twice.
