"Now"?

Mass death has ALWAYS been acceptable in this country.

Pretty much has been. Going back to the first Roanoke colony.

Always and will be tolerated forever.

No, I'm not. I was against it before, and I'm against it now. I may be out of step with the country, but I don't think I'm wrong.

It's particularly palatable when the "right" people are dying, like when TFG and Jared slow walked the Covid response when it was mostly a blue state problem.

America is looking more and more like a terrible place to those outside the country.

I've had Israeli friends in the high-tech industry here get offered great jobs with HUGE salaries in San Francisco or other other such places. Several have declined. They told me that it was mainly the worry that their kids would be in mass shootings at school (especially since they'd be at Jewish schools).

And then I told them how health insurance works in the US.

Sigh. I'd love to save money and spend a month or so back in Boston. Visit my old college hangouts (though many have closed, like Our House in Allston). Go to a Sox game. Go swimming in the Charles. Yell "BC sucks!" at a BC bar. Have pizza at Santarpio's in East Boston. Meet old friends in Charlestown and rob a bank. Go to my old synagogue. See if my quasi-Boston accent comes back after spending 10-15 years speaking Hebrew.

(Some of those are jokes.)

I don't know if I ever will, the way things are going.

We may be going to hell in a bucket, but at least we're enjoying the ride.

The trial featured shocking evidence of LaPierre's mismanagement and abuse of money from the NRA's 5 million members.
LaPierre took luxury trips on a rich friend's yachts - dubbed Illusions and the Grand Illusion - despite the friend also having a lucrative contract with the NRA. LaPierre used the yachts as a refuge when public outrage surged over school shootings.
LaPierre emerged through evidence as a coddled executive living the high life, surrounded by security. He's not, evidence showed, a resourceful, gun-toting man's man well-versed in the art of self defense. Videos showed LaPierre couldn't deliver a kill shot to a suffering elephant after three tries during a luxury hunting trip in Botswana. He admitted he was outfitted with pricey upscale suits. His wife allegedly had a traveling "glam squad."

This lawsuit is ongoing, but George Takei's recent tweet is spot on. These people simply have no conscience.

@GeorgeTakei
It's disheartening when you must in the end conclude that many of the richest, most powerful men in the world are also some of the worst examples of humanity. Strive not to be like them. For all the money and power under heaven cannot a good man make.

The guns and gun owners won a long time ago.

And any and all consequences are acceptable as long as they can keep their guns.

in·dif·fer·ent  having no particular interest or sympathy; unconcerned.

Wrong word.  Many of us are concerned, but I think many of us recognize there's nothing that any individual can do.
Numb and impotent are better descriptors.

Associated Press, content decisions: is the American media a dusty box of neglected sex toys on a dimly lit windowsill or is it more of a dried out turd on a bad stretch of road?

It's been that way since day one.  From murdering the Indigenous to take their lands, to casually killing racial and religious minorities to send their communities a message, to ignoring the latest scientific discoveries about diseases and germs and product safety, to just accepting vigilante murder and terrorism as acceptable options for any topic.  Look at what is on the movie screens since the moving picture was invented.  Europeans did rom-coms and dramas and scifi, but the early American movie theater showed a lot of Westerns.  The sort of movie that glamorized shootouts and murdering Indians and lynching suspected criminals.

America is a backwards and superstitious and violent country, but with a lot of mineral wealth, paved roads, and other trappings of "civilization". And since so many people are Christian, they don't care if lives are ended too early, because the dead will go to Heaven.  More civilized countries try to stop violence, because they know that's bullshiat.

Has been for a while now. In the face of horrific injustice, the go-to response is to normalize it.

If the government didn't need radioactive materials for nuclear bombs, how many people would still be using radium instead of real medicine?  At least with homeopathy, idiots are harming themselves and their immediate families.  But radioactive health products endanger everybody, from store clerks to wastewater treatment plant workers.

Nobody knows what you're objecting to. Don't like that the AP stated the obvious (for lots of Americans, including gunlurvers, no amount of death is too much) or that they stated the obvious a little late (mass murder has been a right-wing tactic for centuries in America). Or is it that you don't like that the AP put words together into coherent sentences that anyone can understand, unlike you?

If little kids being massacred could not bring about any meaningful change, then nothing will.

And that says a lot.

As long as the deaths of "those people" outnumber the deaths of the sacred cows (rich/white/Christian/male) then it will always be tolerated.

You could have an R in Congress have their family gunned down and they'd still vote against gun restrictions. Hell Scalice himself got shot and he's never said anything about guns are bad look what can happen.

Anti-vaxxers are the scum of the Earth and go hand-in-hand with the uneducated Reich.

Things in the US are going to get much MUCH worse before the populace rises up to correct the problem, and by then it just may be too late.

May I suggest the return of these before 2024 for politicians who vote against the country's wishes (Medicare for All, Gun Control, etc ALL have overwhelming support even in red counties) and the wealthy who refuse to pair their fair share/living wage?

It should also be noted that suicides typically make up >60% of annual gun deaths. When you hear that 40k people died from firearms, you can bet that at least 20-24k of those deaths were people who committed suicide.

From 1980-2010 in Los Angeles County, 30,000 people died of hiv/aids. Thirty years.

Democrats came out on top with COVID-19. The Right has stochastic terrorism in the bag.

The best America can do is try and stay in as small as groups as possible, so when a right-winger flips out, we minimize the body count.

Pretty soon Republicans will try and pass laws that require a minimum group size. Democrats will just haggle over the exact number.

The big factor there is that HIV/AIDS is a disease that disproportionately kills a very small community, whereas COVID can kill everybody (disproportionately killing the olds).

The Republican Party has always been about maximum human carnage in my lifetime. Whether promoting endless war, denial of basic healthcare, unfettered gun access, laughing off a deadly pandemic or inspiring genocidal slaughter, nothing makes them happier than scores and scores of American corpses. Prove me wrong.

You're providing this information like it's a good thing.  Even despite the fact that all mass shootings and all suicides by firearm are horrible and that we should do all that we can to eliminate them.  In the only country where they have become commonplace.

Reagan was big on that, but the serious corruption and criminality and leadership ineptitude started with Nixon.
