(Gizmodo)   Finally, we have orbital laser cannons. Oh, wait, sorry, I misread that. Orbital laser communications. Not nearly as fun   (gizmodo.com) divider line

So does the newest version of Starlink. The laser links allow them to relay a signal over the horizon without routing through a land-based station.

If you think about it, the only difference is the size of the laser. We're almost there

That and the 3 million solar panels to power your gigawatt system.

Alternately, a couple of nuclear bombs to pump them. IIRC, Ronnie was 110% behind equipping Space Station Freedom with a few X-ray lasers.

I don't think it had been a thing between satellites.  They had definitely done lasercom from a spacecraft orbiting the moon back to earth and stuff like that.

Satellites in low Earth orbit appear to be moving faster, so you have to keep changing where you're pointing.  Doing it between two satellites in low Earth orbit is even harder because dammit, nobody's holding still.

To be fair, the only difference is the power level.

Vaporization is a form of communciation.  It certainly sends a message.

When you outlaw orbital particle beams only outlaws will have orbital particle beams
