I get closing the branch. But closing the ATM as well? That's a kick in the dick.

A town I lived in 15 years ago had a nice little community bank. They sold out to a big bank, who promptly closed the "branch" and transferred the business to a town 35 miles away.  There was talk about creating a credit union, but no one was willing to make it happen.

As soon as they start putting $1 and $5 bills in the ATM I am done with going into a Bank.

"Residents on the New Brunswick island of Grand Manan are rallying to keep their village's only bank open."

I've been bowling a few times therefore I have an opinion.

It being an island it's probably a fair pain in the ass to keep the thing stocked/emptied on a reasonable time frame

The ATM is filled with cash and maintained by local bank branch employees. If the branch is leaving the island this means any time the receipt printer jams a bank employee has to take the ferry to the island to fix it. Same for stocking it with cash - a bank employee has to carry cash on the ferry to stock it. They don't want to do that, so closed it is.

If some other business on the island wants to set up their own ATM, they could do that.

This is one of my neighbors for real.  He rarely uses a credit card, still writes checks, doesn't have a debit card and has never used an ATM.  At the beginning of the month he gets this monthly allotment of cash from an actual teller and pays cash for groceries, gasoline, and other incidentals.

BTW, tech illiteracy is not just for the superannuated.   A middle aged co-worker called me a few days ago in a panic because she couldn't figure out how to digitally sign a .pdf document.  Turns out she never set up her digital signature.  She likes to brag about her two degrees and how smart she is.

Maybe the Canadian post office can act as a bank for them, like how the US Post Office used to do for rural/poor communities, until they were legally forced to stop.

Resident population over 2,000 (and possibly double that with summer tourists). No competition - even a functioning ATM. Seems big enough to support a credit union, if nothing else for the local shops (which there are) to be able to get a couple rolls of loonies, that sort of thing.  Heck, wouldn't even have to build a building, I doubt anyone else is buying the "built to be a bank" building that Scotiabank isn't taking with them.

Almost all of their cash on that island has to be going in small circles, passing between the people to businesses and employees and to the bank as deposits that then passes the cash back to businesses and employees.

Yeah, this screams "Fine, we'll run our own credit union, we'll give you $5 for the building".  Town of 2k residents can support a CU just fine, there are processing companies out there that essentially roll entire bank operating systems out to them.  Total employees needed:  2.  One teller, one manager.  Community is the board.  Given how collateralization works these days they'll be issuing loans in no time.

yea.. we haven't had $1 in paper format since like 1989, the dollar coin (loonie) replaced it, and after that we replaced our two dollar bill in 1996 with the two dollar coin (Twoonie)

The Canadian one dollar bill, two dollar bill, 25, 500 and 1000 dollar bills no longer exist and are not considered legal tender.

If that - keep an ATM going, it might not need to be doors-open more than 20 hours a week.  Although having only one person is an institutional control risk.

No

The 13th word is not a password.  It completly changes the resulting private key.  Its the "salt" that results in whole new completely unique private key.

There are enough 256 bit private keys to give every atom in the known visible universe its own unique private key.

Unhackable.

Roughly 10^77 power number of unique private keys.

U leave a grand or two in your default wallet which requires only the 12 word seed phrase to access. It takes the 13th word to get the default wallet.  Remember they wont see that wallet w just the hardwallet and 12 word seed phrase.

Fun Fact: You can't get $1 bills in Canada, even if you go into the bank.

Some newer ATMs do let you choose your mix of $5 - $100 bills though.

What is the crime rate there? Zero, or close to it?

They can get my hardwallett, PIN, and 12 word seed phrase but they still wont get any coin.

They wont know its in my hidden wallet on my hard wallet.  To access that they must know the 13th word (passphrase) of my 12 word seed phrase which exists only in my head.

It's a good thing that criminals are honour bound to just leave you be in that case, and are known to never threaten violence or harm.

Thieves want money and valuables not bodies

Bodies attract too much attention from the lawmen

U must be young

Its been a little over three years since the last time I carried any form of cash, I'll probably keep that streak going until I have to visit some less developed country with archaic transaction models like some of the Caribbean resort countries or the US.

yea.. we haven't had $1 in paper format since like 1989, the dollar coin (loonie) replaced it, and after that we replaced our two dollar bill in 1996 with the two dollar coin (Twoonie)

The Canadian one dollar bill, two dollar bill, 25, 500 and 1000 dollar bills no longer exist and are not considered legal tender.

Wait until when Queen Elizabeth kicks the bucket and you have to replace all your money with the next monarch. Hope you like carrying pictures of Prince Charles in your wallet.
