I'm sure it'll be fine. If we let them ban books from libraries and sue booksellers to stop them from selling LGBTQ books, certainly the religious right will stop there and not consider banning books on non-Christian religions, civil rights, "foreign" cultures, or even left-of-center political philosophies.

This is fine.

There's also a decent chance that Barnes and Noble would just throw money at them to get them to go away rather than waste time and money on the legal shiat. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if that's what these jackholes are hoping for.

Kai Cheng Thom's book From the Stars in the Sky to the Fish in the Sea has amazing artwork for kids and adults. It's hte kind of artwork that kids will open and look at for years to come. The rhythm for reading aloud is also good for bedtime, and helped catapult it to the level of classic here in Canada.

Buy it for any kid you know. Also a great present for parents who can't decide if they should throw a gender reveal party. It is a gentle way to give them something to think about.

No one should be holding gender-reveal parties. At this rate, it's only a matter of time before there is submitted a Fark headline reading "Gender reveal party results in detonation of tactical nuclear weapon".

I hope so, but I have to admit to surprise that B&N still exists. This suit is utterly without merit, but it just takes one Trumper judge...

I wish I knew what happened to this project to publish an anthology for trans and nonbinary kiddos. Seems to have stalled. :/ Probably something to do with the pandemic? I imagine that if the Fark writer brigade submitted stories, even one page microfiction, Annick Press would take the hint and kickstart the project again.

Of course they are, and blatantly so. There is absolutely nothing inherently sexual about being gay, no more than being straight is inherently sexual. There is nothing inherently sexual about being trans, any more than being cis is inherently sexual.

The political right have made it a strategy to dishonestly treat gay and trans identities as sexual, and therefore exclusively for adults in order to justify oppressing and erasing LGBT people from society under the guise of protecting children from adult sexual material.

I'm bored at work, so I decided to do some digging.

Sex scene from one of the books mentioned in the lawsuit.

So, if this is obscene then a great many things need to be removed from the shelves. Starting with the bible. But, because we're not talking about absolute standards of obscenity, the bible would probably get a pass because it has cultural impact, and is widely accepted.

The standards seem written in such a way to include the bible, and exclude anything lawmakers in Virginia are prudish about.

It's not more obscene than Xanth, which libraries in Virginia do carry.

IANAL, though. Just bored.

Yes, but the point is that I could find Xanth in library catalogs in Virginia. Didn't even try looking for his other stuff.

Also, it was the first thing to come to mind when it comes to novels that teenagers have access to in school that has sexual material. Mainly because of my own teenage years.

Please. Nobody will ever do that. Bunch of pansies so-called leftists are today. There will be the usual whimpers of "o howcome nobody ever codified the right of book stores to sell whatever they wanted" and calls for the usual legal action and then everyone will move on to the next outrage du jour.

No wonder all the old activists are dying off. Probably from embarrassment.

I recently read Gender Queer. Party because of the controversy but also for my own reasons. The spiciest thing in there is when the author fantasizes about Plato's symposium and visualizes that in the style of an ancient Greek pottery piece.

It's very clear to me this book is dangerous to conservatives, even more so than an outright trans narrative, because it presents being non-binary as a valid choice. And that rejection of gender roles strikes against the society they are trying to build (rebuild to some extent, though the past is not as simple as they imagine).

They are horrified a kid might find it and empathize, or worse see that they have something in common with the author.

Yeah - as a youngun liked the Xanth books at first, started to become apparent that he was a little tooo interested in certain things.  You can write stories about whatever you want to, I'm not gonna stop anyone, but I hit excessive squick/flashing red warning lights pretty fast once I started looking at what else was out there.  That led me to reread some of the ones I had liked and go, "Wait a minute..."

I'm predicting this kind of thing is going to backfire in the long run. If you're a teenaged trans person right now, still trying to figure out who you are, you're absolutely going to seek out Gender Queer once you see an article like this. It's going to sell more books.

Even aside from that particular speculation, today's young people are the most open-minded, LGBT out-and-proud, and progressive generation we've ever seen. The GQP is just slowly, permanently burning itself and limiting its future support.

It has been a very long time since I read any his stuff, but I rather got the impression that he kinda just followed his muse wherever she led. Perhaps if I reread those books, I'd feel as you do. I can no longer remember anything about the plot of Firefly, only vague emotional impressions that it was... uncomfortably different.

If he really does have certain urges, then at least he managed to sublimate those into creative outlets.

The only way it will backfire is if we keep these assholes out of power, or vote their asses out.

Otherwise, expect it to get much worse.  All one has to do is look at the things all authoritarian nations did once they had total control of the reins of power.  Not only will they burn books, they'll start burning people again.
