This was my introduction to Vangelis. As much as my 14-year old self loved watching Carl Sagan expound on the universe, the musical selections really struck me. RIP keyboardist man https://youtu.be/AUFlLBX9Bq0

Seeing Blade Runner was my first experience outside of John Williams where I could see how much work a score could do in shaping a film. I know he won for Chariots but man Blade Runner is where the magic starts for me.

It was seriously impressive.  2049 did pretty well trying to emulate Vangelis, but never quite reaching the same high.

And it's not like it's a bad score! It's just not Vangelis. The man had a signature.

Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire are just a small sampling. His collaboration with Jon Anderson, Albedo 0.39, Spiral, Heaven and Hell the Album, Conquest of Paradise, Antarctica...

Blade Runner is obviously one of my favorite scores of all time.  It was seriously ahead of its time.

There's kind of a reason the score and the movie get sampled so much in modern electronic dance music, especially drum n bass.

That's a damned shame, but 79 is a good run.
Cosmos and Blade Runner are some of my all-time favorites.
The City and Oceanic are excellent for mood music, I use them a lot to get in a good space for writing. Voices is good too.
I did not like Mythodea. I can't tell you why, it just didn't gel with me.

I very randomly chose to listen to the Chariots of Fire theme this morning and discovered he was dead in the comments under the video.

Crash is obviously the worst best picture winner but Chariots of Fire must be a contender for least cultural impact, score notwithstanding.

That was probably one of my few complaints about 2049: the music. And here's the thing, I was actually okay that the music wasn't Vangelis and I never felt that it was trying to be Vangelis. It was more just loud base and ambience. Cool. But then they go and play Vangelis right at the end and, minutes before the credits, I'm suddenly reminded how much better the original film's score was. Doesn't really tarnish the film but a weird choice.

CSB: Came upon three Vangelis albums in a bin of vinyl at a thrift store years ago. I love the Blade Runner soundtrack so I had to get them. One was China. Another was The Friends of Mr. Cairo (which is actually Jon and Vangelis but whatever.)

And the third was Beaubourg.

What an odd album. It's like a series of random blips and bleeps. Almost sounds like listening to traffic in a science fiction metropolis. The weird thing was, it wasn't necessarily bad. I would never just throw it on as something to listen to, like on a car ride, but as background music, it was interesting.

I later learned that Beaubourg was the last of four albums for RCA Records and people believe he recorded it just to get out of his contract. I can see where they might get that impression, but my understanding is Vangelis denied this.

/ RIP
// I think I'll listen to Albeido

Blade Runner OST is an absolute masterpiece.
Spent many nights studying and/or with a nice joint, a pair of headphones and that cassette (eventually cd).
Even his more conventional soundtracks were outstanding.

It takes talent to make musical tones out of the smell of your own farts.

Everything about Chariots of Fire, including the music, was a master class in awards bait pretension.

When I was in like the 3rd grade (in the early 80's) my class had a teacher who was a younger guy and he used to tell us about Vangelis and play his music in class. I even had a cassette tape for years. I always wondered how that guy (the teacher) was doing all these years later and every time I hear of Vangelis I thought of that guy. I looked it up this morning and saw my teacher died in 2003. RiP to them both.

Every once in awhile I break out Cosmos and watch it again, mostly to hear Vangelis' swirling score over top Carl Sagan's eloquent rhetoric.

It holds up amazingly well despite the fact it was made over 40 years ago and our knowledge of astronomy has advanced so much since then.
