Lizzo strikes me as one of those rare celebrities that understands it could all be over in the blink of an eye, because it seems like she's really just enjoying herself and try to spread some positivity. As far as poppy, top 40 stuff, you could do a lot worse.

Alexander the Great made it to 32. Mozart, 35. Joan of Arc, 19. Lou Gehrig, 37. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Any Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Jean-Michel Basquiat and how many others, 27. What does 34 have to do with anything? A person can pack an awful lot of life into just a handful of decades.

So she's been alive only slightly longer than I've been out of high school, and her career has gone for a shorter time than my daughter has been alive, and I've only heard her name maybe 3 times. What has she done to make a movie about that a million other singer/songwriters haven't gone through?

I'd heard the name but didn't really know who she was until her recent SNL appearance.

She seemed like fun. Not my music, but I liked that she was posturing or trying too hard to be edgy or whatever. She just seemed like she was having a good time. Very likeable.

Still not going to listen to her music, but it does mean I'll root for her.

In a career spanning only ten years so far, she's won multiple Grammy's, a Guinness World Record (most weeks at #1 for a female rap artist), a Clio, and assorted other awards from Billboard, BET, MTV, and the AMA among others. She's made two SNL appearances, once in a dual role as host and musical artist. Does that justify a biopic? I dunno. But I've seen great bio films/music docs on bands/artists with far fewer accomplishments.

Got a DM from Chris Evans in response to a thirst trap she posted - that alone (being worthy of such) makes her celebrity entirely worth it.

// game recognize game
// she's also so relentlessly positive that she deserves to have her fame extended as far and as long as possible

Well maybe instead of just being a judgmental prick about her success you could actually watch the film and learn what she's been through.

It's a pretty standard reaction for them. "I don't know who this is so why should anyone else care?"

It's not even a very good question. Regardless of what I think of her music, her success makes clear she has a lot of fans, and if an artist has a lot of fans that's about all you need to justify a documentary about them.

Hell, even just a handful is justification enough. I absolutely loved the Dinosaur Jr. documentary, for example, and it's not like those guys were tearing up the charts even when they were at the peak of their success. I've enjoyed docus on even smaller artists, too. Should they not have been made because the artist wasn't big or didn't have a long career or didn't have some wildly unique story?

Grumpy old man gatekeeping was weird and off-putting when I was young, and now that I'm at the age where all my peers are engaging in it, it's even MORE annoying now. So many of us are becoming the "in MY day!" curmudgeons we used to hate, and it sucks.

A) she could probably do better - see above, re: Chris farking Evans
2) I'm married, and my wife probably wants to sleep with Lizzo more than I do (and gezunte hayt, sez I) - personally I'd prefer a jam session over a roll in the hay.

But it's weird that you think enjoying someone's personality and musical talent means you want to sleep with them. You should maybe consider ways other than sexual in which relationships can hold value.

Unlike most pop stars she actually has talent insofar as she's got a great set of pipes, she can play an instrument, and she writes most of her own songs. Is she my cup of tea? Not really. But she's not a pre-fab, autotuned sounds-alike. Meanwhile, there's tons of great music being made today. I've got no problem dunking on hack pop artists who achieve fame/noteriety through the sheer force of their personality/public life/image as opposed to the objective quality of their product. But Lizzo isn't that.

Anyone remember the VHI "I Love The 90's" series? Scott Ian, being a go-to personality for those things, was questioned about the band Hanson. He said "Hanson were three little kids playing their instruments and singing, so I have complete respect for that. Probably a lot of people are going to diss Hanson, but I won't diss them." Same kind of thing.

Neither of us said anything about her selling a sexualized image of herself.

What I said what that *my* appreciation for her music and personality (well, and Chris Evans') does not equate to *my* wanting to sleep with her, and that OP should consider why they assume that (me stating) my appreciation for those means I wanna bang her.

Thanks for missing the point, though! I sure feel told.

// but yes, I know the long and boring history of "she's not gonna sleep with you" when a guy on the internet mentions a woman without demanding a sandwich or permanent kitchen residency

Calling her obese (or more accurately, morbidly obese) isn't shaming.  It's fact.  What she's capable of doing has no relevance, just as an obese NFL player's capabilities aren't relevant (more on that in a bit).  Statistically speaking, she (and everyone who's obese) is not only shortening her life span, but she's opening herself up to an enormous range of debilitating health conditions, from diabetes to heart disease.  She's not some kind of goddamn hero or role model for being comfortable in her obesity.  She's just one more obese person who's rationalizing her food choices instead of changing them, which is no different than any other addict.

Here's someone who gets it, and I would imagine he could run literal circles around her every day of the week, and leave her gasping for breath while he was barely winded.

Bearing the literal burden of an elite offensive lineman also took its toll. Marpet, who played at 300lb (136kg), developed sleep apnea and hypertension. "I was eating as clean as possible for a 300-pounder but having all the weight on your body is bad," he says.
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2022/may/18/ali-marpet-tampa-bay-buccaneers-retirement-tom-brady-nfl-football

2022-05-20 6:51:06 AM
And FWIW, I'm a formerly morbidly obese person myself who had my own health scare (cancer), which prompted me to lose the weight and improve my health.  2 1/2 years at/under my goal weight.  The new doctor I started seeing a year ago told me, when I related my health history, that if all of her patients did what I did, "following the science" to lose weight and improve my health, she'd be out of a job.  For all of our complaining about how our problem is healthcare, the real problem is how most of us completely disregard our health.  Because what's happening here in the US is happening everywhere, even in countries that have healthcare systems that aren't for-profit.

Love The Current and Radio K here in Minneapolis, if my radio isnt on one it's on the other or playing through the phone app. I forget how spoiled I am on that channel when I take a drive out of town and have to deal with regular radio or stream through the phone. But then you hit the tippy top of the state where phone signal is questionable and that's a whole different radio to where silence is preferable. Anyways, great station to find a constant stream of new music/artists. Also, love Lizzo.

The Weekend Baker: She's not some kind of goddamn hero or role model for being comfortable in her obesity.

Who the fark was saying that? All I've said was that she's a role model for being musically (and choreographically) talented, and for being a relentlessly positive person. I've also questioned why her "farkability" matters at all for her job - she's a musician, not a porn star, right?

You seem to be saying that fat people, talented though they may be in some areas, shouldn't be famous lest we (the culture at large) accidentally "celebrate obesity" or somesuch nonsense. Your thoughts about her body can go live with Jordan Peterson's thoughts about the new SI cover model - in the farking trash.

// also, you know her diet? you KNOW that she - despite the kind of workout regimen it must currently take to be able to pull off her concerts - could be a statuesque 180 pounds at 5'10 (let's let her eat a slice of pizza every now and again) if only she ate and worked out the "right" way?
// some people are just that big, period - and it doesn't really matter if she is or isn't one of those people, because her size is none of my (our) farking concern
// so either enjoy her music or don't, but you really don't have to (dare I say, "shouldn't") use news stories about her to vent your spleen about why fat people disgust you
