This is the second day in a row we've had a green discussing what prog-rock is. I'm guessing one of the mods is chain smoking spliffs while listening to his Yes CD collection.

A friend and I used to co-mod a prog rock community back in the LiveJournal era. The question of "what is prog?" would come up about every month or so. I can't recall that any definitive answer was ever reached, but at least the discussions were always polite.

/another frequent question: "Why don't more women like prog?"
//in a LJ community created and run by two women
///"Should we tell them?" "Nah."

Prog rock is when 23:17 might be either the length of the track or the time signature.

Prog, to me, is a catch-all category for anything that isn't blues based, or 4 chord (I-V-Vi-IV). Often with extended themes and variations on the themes.

I still love to kick back and crank up Tarkus or Close to the Edge, or Seconds Out.

But I also enjoy the different ways it evolved.

He and rappers and storytellers and slam poets and anyone else can be emotional in what they say and how they say it.  But take the human voice away and three chords is boring.

Prog rock is musicians trying to imitate how a poorly-tuned machine learning algorithm would make music.

The weirdest part is that they started doing this decades before machine learning algorithms could actually do that.

Since the genre is so varied. There are a lot of different styles all called prog. Try different bands. I like a lot of prog music, but it isn't across the board. For example, I love ELP, they are god-like to me. I "enjoy" a lot of Porcupine Tree but Gentle Giant doesn't do a thing for me.

I came of age in the 70s. I've never been fond of what's been  called prog rock. But I have always been a Pink Floyd fan. It's only recently that I've heard them called prog rock. So... I dunno. I like it, I guess?

My introduction to prog came from Guy Guden's Space Pirate Radio.  It was a show that ran without commercials on Sunday/Monday midnight to 5am.  Mondays I would be sufficiently weirded out to face the week.  In the mid-70s, I was sampling every time of music, even, god fark me, country.  But thanks to Space Pirate Radio, I broadened my horizons.

That author really hates prog.

Trying to group Tull's "Songs From the Wood" and "Crest of a Knave" with ELP's "Tarkus" and anything by King Crimson is pointless. Far too diverse to be lumped into a single genre.  Come on, ELP's "Pirates" needs an orchestra for the full effect!

Author's claim about punk stripping away all the excess is so much bullshiat. Half the punks couldn't play their instruments.

Pick a prog group and a punk group, and have them each play a song from the other's catalog. You'd get a nuanced punk song, and the punks couldn't get through the first 2 bars. Let's see the Sex Pistols try "YYZ" or "Epitaph".

"Prog" is a label created by music "journalists". Like "Heavy Metal".
And whether you like them or not, Pink Floyd is unique enough to be in their own category anyway.

According to the Recording Academy, who determines the Grammy winners, Tull is "Heavy Metal/Hard Rock".

A "nuanced punk song" would suck. On the other hand, if the Sex Pistols played YYZ, they would burn the f$cker to the ground, it would be an utter catastrophe, and it would be hilariously awesome.

"Even if prog-rock did become the most despised genre in popular music across the late 1970s and '80s... "

Yeah..no. There's something worse than hatred, and that's ambivalence. I don't think prog rock ever got enough exposure to be most despised. That would be disco.

As a lover of Prog and Soul and Metal and Power Pop and Electronica and New Wave, and several other genres I've forgotten, all I have to say is: Music is Music and anyway you like it is valid.  Why anyone wants to put down any other persons taste in Music is beyond me.  I'm just grateful that there is this wonderful thing called Music for me to enjoy playing, performing, writing, recording and listening to. Revel in whatever Music you are into but please remember to respect others opinions.  And yes, the word Music deserves to be capitalized.
