The most advanced case of "Belt and Road disease".  Most of the debt is to China, for Chinese construction projects that never really made sense (but plenty of people in Colombo got bribes).  China gets anything of value in Sri Lanka (ports) and a vassal state right off India with serious maritime importance to world trade.

Between Covid cutting the tourism and the President forcing farmers to go organic by banning agrochemical imports, the place has lost it's sources of income and ability to feed itself.
