At least RPO characters were selected with the theme of dumbass nostalgia.

MultiVersus is just whatever random characters WB happens to own.

Like the RPO movie?

The book was not the best, but the movie changed so much, much for the worse (like almost every challenge), it is not funny. and swapped much from pure 80's nostalgia to what the studio owned and had access to.

This. Whatever money grab that WB wants to use the Iron Giant in won't taint the film for me.

The future would be pretty bleak if indie games weren't a thing. The problem these days is finding the ones you enjoy when there's 50 of them released every minute. Steam doesn't do any quality curation at all and Nintendo lets devs apply 50 genre tags to every title. Yes, System Clock HD by Shovelware Ltd. is a Roleplaying Farming Simulation Sports Singleplayer War game, and wow it's 80% off for the next 3 months!

The novel, Ready Player One (admittedly never read it), may have come first. When it comes to movies, though, I prefer Wreck It Ralph.

All of this is why, in 2022, every battle royale and free-to-play online game under the sun is crossing over with anything even remotely popular. Godzilla in Call of Duty?

The Monsterverse mixed with "Duty Calls", wow, that is so exceptionally stupid, why would anyone...(looks at the screenshot)....oooooh. (EDF!)

Well, that only means that the Onion's Ghost of Christmas Future is on point and "Marvel vs DC" is right
around the corner.

The worst was The Shining challenge!  It made so little sense, in the context of the book!
I don't think anyone anywhere thinks of the Shining as "an 80s movie"

Ready Player Two covers this really well being more pop-culture than just video games, dealing with movies and music of the 80s.
It's not a great book, mind you, but it expands the 80s nostalgia a lot more.

And to the topic at hand, most fighting games that use existing IP have the characters acting "out of character"

Most of the characters in Super Smash Brothers are not physically violent characters that would knock you off a platform to your death!

It's a game!

In the old days they never had to rights to anything worthwhile and all crossovers had a few Captain Ersatz to fill out the rosters and some obvious big names missing

2022-05-19 8:22:28 AM
In the movie the Iron Giant chose non-violence.  In the hands of a kid, maybe the action figure Iron Giant chooses to smash the Skeletor and Darth Vader in Barbie's Dream House.  Or maybe the kid has the Iron Giant and Batman fight the dachshund from next door.  Good for the kid for not limiting himself to somebody else's story.

I enjoyed it as a pulpy page-turner.  Not everything has to be great American literature.

That said, he apparently had one good book in him and everything since has been pale imitations or retreads.  Which, to be fair, is at least one more good book than I could produce.

A little too much handwringing. It's a brawler in the style of Smash Bros. It's gonna be silly and fun. I'd love something like that on my PS5 and fully plan on enjoying it.

Have a feeling Garnet is gonna be my main unless she's very low tier. I like brawlers in the Gannondorf vein. I am eager to see if the Ultra-Instinct Shaggy will be reflected in game - I hope so. I love when companies accept the memes.

I was flying to Belgium and driving the county for a week so the time flew by.

Most of it was inconsistency and editing issues.  A good editor may have made it a much better book but likely at the sacrifice of the pop culture references.

I could see some tighter editing helping it from meandering. Then again, the constant stream of pop culture references was basically the point of the book, even if it didn't always result in a great narrative.

I disagree. the movie, while just ok, was somewhat watchable and at least had Artemis as an actual character with a modicum of agency as opposed to just some sort of prize. The changes, as they moved away from the original narrative, were definite improvements, and I'm always a sucker for "Blue Monday". The book, on the other hand, was one of the worst written popular things I've read in my life (admittedly, I didn't read Twilight and its ilk). I mean, it's as bad as the Monster Hunter series and undead L. Ron's Mission Earth series.

You mean the damsel in distress they had to rescue when she was abducted into legal slavery? Movie Artemis is a failed activist with a goal and no idea how to achieve it, who in a world where debts leave people enslaved lets hers rack up to the point she could be.

The book was too centered on Wade and Wade was a highschool incel loner so we did not see much outside his immediate self centered field of view, she was off doing stuff while Wade was off on his own.  In the book, Artemins found the tomb of Horrors challenge first, just was not as good as Wade at joust. She also found and solved the 2nd challenge first.

I'm by no means saying that she was treated well in the movie, just that it was better than in the book. As you point out, the book is told from an obsessive incel's perspective, which we are supposed to celebrate for some reason, while the movie allows us to see that she actually has been doing what Our Hero says he wants to do without his dismissive filter.

/Whether the repellent obsessive incel is merely the PoV character or the author is an exercise for the reader.

I felt the same way when Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsicame out. Like, come on why would Luke fight Leia, that's not consistent with his character from the movie! And how would Leia fight bikini Leia when they're the same person?! And why isn't any of the characters surprised that Boba Fett is still alive, huh?

How dare they treat adaptations of fictional characters this way.

Mission Earth was OK dumb fun. Or it would have been if the guy knew how to write. Every third sentence was IN ALL CAPS!!, and it was all two sentences and a break, 2 more sentences, etc.

Actually, I just figured it out... It's like trying to read a novel written on Twitter.

Half the matches just ended due to a ring-out.

It's becoming harder to find big games that are simply themselves and have zero crossover IP or special cameo characters or costumes.

Also bullshiat to this. For Free to Play games maybe, but those games are attempting to pull in as much crossover audience as possible because they survive by selling cosmetics and people will pay for IP they're fans of. But non-FTP games? Not hard to find. Hell Halo Infinite multi is FTP and doesn't have anything other than an armor coloring that might be similar to Iron Man but they for sure ain't advertising it as that because they're not farking with The Mouse.

Yeah it's one of the things that have me excited to try the alpha that just started.  I got the invite, but I guess I didn't set up an account right, so now I'm re-registered or something.  It's probably cause I was on vacay during the first beta test and should have set it up then.

No, it really wasn't. However, it was an easy book, which worked quite well for occasional readers. I liked the nostalgia of it all, but it just felt very amateur, which ultimately, I guess it was. My brother sent me Ready Player Two a few months back; I don't know when I'll get around to reading it though.

This. Anything that fan-tastic that works the villain from Tomb Of Horrors into a scene with a head to head match up in the Joust arcade game gets my vote for fun read of that year.  It's a book about what VR could be like if it were just like kids' imaginations, and if it was targeted at 12-year-old me, well, so was Stranger Things, and I loved that too.

I also loved other stuff in 2011: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo movie, The Triple Agent (nonfic about a mole, I'd been on a kick starting with Operation Mincemeat iirc), and a ton of other sci fi like Embassytown, Leviathan Wakes, and Reamde.

If you didn't like RP1, but you like lite sci-fi, try out A. Lee Martinez, he's fun, esp Emperor Mollusk Versus The Sinister Brain, came out right around then, very fun superhero sci fi comedy.
