That's the Joke

They ignore Fetterman's win and then present 5 races, with only 3 'establishment' wins as Progressives losing  'all over the country'

Seriously, tell Democrats that want to run for political office look at Fetterman's campaign and emulate that according to your district.  A Progressive but with an every man's message that resonates with the working class.

Ah Politico, all the accuracy of Jim Cramer, none of the cool sound effects.

Gosh... I wonder why corporate America wants to drown progressives in the bath tub? Or considering the owner of Politico... maybe a nice shower of poison gas.

I've been told that we shouldn't have to appeal for votes and that it's the voters fault if they don't understand how awesome we are...

So if I'm interpreting this correctly, it means that progressive politics are incredibly popular and have a proven track record of success.

Yeah, but instead of a message of representing the working class, shouldn't they needlessly focus on social wedge issues around race and guns? I mean, sure they could tackle that after getting elected, but I would feel better voting for them is there are lots of posturing on these issues alone.

Why would anyone want progressives to lose? I have yet to see anyone on Fark provide a substantive argument against their policies.

2022-05-18 11:45:48 AM
So I get NYT's morning newsletter written by David Leonhardt, and this morning it started off with this, talking about the primaries in general and Fetterman in particular. Frankly it made a lot more sense than Politico's stupid commentary.

"Still, I find Fetterman to be notable because Democrats have nominated so few candidates like him in recent years. The party is more likely to choose ideologically consistent candidates whose presentation resembles that of a law professor or think-tank employee. Fetterman, like many working-class voters, has a mix of political beliefs. On the campaign trail, he wears shorts and a hoodie.

Describing his appeal to voters, Sarah Longwell, a Republican political strategist, said: "It's not that he's progressive that they like or don't like. They like that he's authentic."

...For years, most Democrats trying to figure out how to win over swing voters have taken a more technocratic approach than either Adams or Fetterman. Centrist Democrats have often urged the party to move to the center on almost every issue - even though most voters support a progressive economic agenda, such as higher taxes on the rich.

Liberal Democrats have made the opposite mistake, confusing the progressive politics of college campuses and affluent suburbs with the actual politics of the country. Some liberals make the specific mistake of imagining that most Asian, Black and Latino voters are more liberal than they are. As a shorthand, the mistake is sometimes known as the Latinx problem (named for a term that most Latinos do not use).

It remains unclear whether Fetterman represents a solution to the Democrats' working-class problem. But the problem is real: It is a central reason that Democrats struggle so much outside the country's large metro areas. And if Democrats hope to solve it, they will probably have a better chance if more of their candidates feel familiar to working-class voters.

Politics isn't only about policy positions. People also vote based on instinct and comfort."

So... an Eisenhower Republican?

// yes, I know, old news/joke is old
// but seriously: Democrats used to win in labor states like WV because they were pro-worker (*cough*unions*cough*, or hadn't you heard about the latest Starbucks/Amazon warehouse to unionize?), and right as the Dems joined Team Red in the "fark workers" camp 40 farking years ago those states went Republican - and The Democrats in Charge have been wondering for those same 40 farking years how they lost those states and how to win them back
// you don't have to mention that being pro-worker is also egalitarian (or even anti-racist, if you try a little), but it still gets to be a nice side effect

The democrats actually need more Manchins, not in blue states but in red states. We need Manchins in Mississippi, Oklahoma, Kentucky, etc. They wouldn't be left of Sanders but they keep complete nut jobs on the right from being way farking worse.

Right now the slimmest of margins in the Senate means Manchin can block whatever he wants. With a handful more conservative democrats, chances are better that one of them will vote for whatever he wants to block.

No, they cover six. At the very bottom they mention Oregon where Andrea Salinas appears to have beaten out over Carrick Flynn. So, really, it's 3-3 by Politico's count and that's "coming up short" somehow.

Shockingly, when a candidate with progressive ideas projects strength, it attracts voters.  Nobody wants to join up with a bunch of victims and losers.  What is this?  The New Testament?

Progressive chiming in here. I like Fetterman. I like him because he comes across as genuine. I get the feeling that he wants to help people. He and I do not agree on every political issue and that's OK. I do not believe that he's going to be silent and do whatever the DNC tells him to do. He comes across as a younger Sanders to me in that regard. He truly believes that he serves the people and that is something that is lacking in a significant percentage of politicians these days. He is not Pelosi or Biden who want to stop all progress to ensure the power of the status quo. I believe that he is going to speak up against injustice and be a thorn in the side of the better things aren't possible Democrats. That is my hope for him.

I don't want liberals to lose. And that's why progressives are a risky bet. Because if they lose in the general, now we're stuck with an extreme rightwing fascist who just might start a genocide. And he won't care if you're a moderate Democrat or a progressive, he'll kill us all equally.

The Democrats have kept "Triangulating" and going "No airspace on the Right" for decades. It hasn't worked except that it's made the Democrats lose while being more like Republicans as the Republicans become actual Nazis.

It's like the Dems need to stop anointing every "combat vet turned prosecutor after two years at McKinsey" as the next great hope.  People recognize those dorks as strivers who will immediately throw their constituents to the wolves.
