Here's a thing: This impending SCOTUS ruling is being interpreted by the illiterate troglodytes as SCOTUS making abortion illegal nationwide.  I had to explain to my sister that that isn't what it would do.  The ruling just says it's not a Federal right, so each state can make laws, or even make State Constitutional amendments, either pro or con.  Now I get to explain this to her, and she won't get it at all.

She should have recused herself?  Once again it's do as I say,  not as I do.  I hope the Michigan Supreme Courtyard by Marriott strikes the law down.  I think it needs to go away but I really want to watch the god botherers cry about how their god isn't being sufficiently worshipped.

On the other hand, Republicans are mulling a nationwide ban, if they can achieve power.

This decision is just the first step down a pretty ugly path.

I like how planned parenthood framed it as a right to body autonomy and it is non distinguishable from being able to refuse medical procedure.

If that gains traction and future court rulings, then the whole vaccine refusal cause *I don't wanna* argument is weakened (there are valid medical reasons and "limited" religious reasons)

I live in Michigan and Whitmer is practically the last vestige of sanity here right now.

There are no less than ten candidates running in the GOP gubernatorial primary and they are all like your crazy right wing uncle decided to run for governor as a Republican. The leading candidate for state representative from my area is a gun toting fundamentalist anti-abortion pastor and his signs are goddamned everywhere I look.

Every single day I pass by a broken down trailer with a confederate and a "fark Biden" flag hanging from it.

I see more Confederate flags in rural Michigan than I do in rural Alabama.

The cities, thankfully, still have a modicum of sense left but the boondocks have lost their farking minds.

Basically their campaign platform is three things;

Trump really won.
No abortions ever.
Lock up Whitmer for killing old people.

CPAC is being held in Hungary, hosted by Viktor Orban who is their dictator.  He stacked the courts and replaced everyone involved who ran elections to overthrow democracy.  The people let this happen as he claimed LGBTQ and Muslims were replacing and destroying their Christian heritage.
Sound familiar?  The US GQP are using him as a role model to destroy democracy here.
Oh, and Orban is a cock holster of the mass murderer and fascist dictator Putin.
Tucker Carlson hosted his hate platform from Hungary and has regularly praised Orban to gullible US conservatives.  Tucker believes we must end democracy to preserve our "heritage".  And by that he means going back to pre-1820.

There's a reason the right to abortion (and privacy in general) became a Federal issue, just like Brown v. Board, Morgan v. Virginia, Hernandez v. Texas , Gideon v. Wainwright, Miranda v. Arizona,.. and that reason is states could not be trusted to not stomp all over people's constitutional rights. But sticking strictly to abortion and related subjects, you can now expect the following SCOTUS rulings to be re-challenged in the coming years:

Griswold v. Connecticut/Eisenstadt v. Baird, which determined that laws that ban contraception are unconstitutional.

Stenberg v. Carhart, which determined that laws which prohibit partial-birth abortions without exceptions where they are necessary to save the life of the mother are unconstitutional.

Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt, which determined that making women seeking abortions navigate through an expensive and time-consuming labyrinth of red tape first imposed undue burden and therefore was unconstitutional.

But hey, "State's Rights!"

The Michigan GQP is also very well funded. The Maddocks and the DeVos family are the gatekeepers to Republican politics in this state and their agendas are everything evil about the GOP. Their coalition are hillbillies and farmers who are easily brought on board with Bibles and hatred.

So... the forward looking black market cannabis entrepreneur should look into smuggling Plan B day after pills, and cultivating a network of underground physicians who do abortions? Because making something illegal that is potentially needed desperately by a significant percentage of the population never works out well. As evidence, I give you Prohibition (which gave us the Mafia) and the War on Drugs (which gave us the Cartels).

Gleicher, who also serves as chief judge on the Michigan Court of Appeals, informed the parties in April that she makes annual contributions to Planned Parenthood and, as a lawyer, represented the organization in a 1997 abortion case. She said she didn't feel it should disqualify her.

WTF?  She's a donor to one of the parties in the case, and she was literally the lawyer for one of the parties in the case and doesn't think that would warrant a recusal?????

I have no earthly idea what the merits of the ruling are.  (I don't know what the law says, nor do I know what the Michigan Constitution says.)  But how in the world someone with such an obvious conflict not recuse herself?

(And for those on the left who don't see it, let's imagine that instead it's The Heritage Foundation filing a lawsuit against some tax law.  The judge makes annual donations to The Heritage Foundation and was their lawyer in a 1997 case concerning a similar tax law.)

I see more Confederate flags in rural Michigan than I do in rural Alabama.

The cities, thankfully, still have a modicum of sense left but the boondocks have lost their farking minds.

I've lived in Michigan for 37 years. I have seen one confederate flag that some teenagers were holding outside their vehicle. Stop making shiat up.

I've lived here 40 years and remember when my home town held an auction for some klan gear and acted like it was no big deal. Same town would hold a klan rally on the courthouse lawn every five or so years to reinstate that they were the superior people. There were far worse than confederate flags  flying those days. They aren't making shiat up. Maybe your area is less insane, but I recently lived next to a white supremacists trumper for 3 years before he moved somewhere more tolerable to his brand of shiat. It's everywhere out here, with pockets of sanity in the rural areas. Not nearly enough though.

Aquapope: Here's a thing: This impending SCOTUS ruling is being interpreted by the illiterate troglodytes as SCOTUS making abortion illegal nationwide.  I had to explain to my sister that that isn't what it would do.  The ruling just says it's not a Federal right, so each state can make laws, or even make State Constitutional amendments, either pro or con.  Now I get to explain this to her, and she won't get it at all.

Here's a thing: sending abortion rights back to the states is just a first step for Republicans. They want to ban it nationwide, and will continue to work to do so.

Northern: CPAC is being held in Hungary, hosted by Viktor Orban who is their dictator.
/only the best people GQP, only the best people.
//Remember when fascists were not admired?

Thing is, America only turned "anti-fascist" because Japan attacked us. If that hadn't happened, there's a good chance America would have taken Germany's side in the war. America has had a fascist streak going back to before the term was coined.

IDisposable: Gleicher, who also serves as chief judge on the Michigan Court of Appeals, informed the parties in April that she makes annual contributions to Planned Parenthood and, as a lawyer, represented the organization in a 1997 abortion case.

Thomas isn't going to recuse himself from Jan 6th related cases, so fark that "we go high, they go low" bullshiat. This is a war.

I don't have to prove shiat to you. fark off.

It's easy to create boogeymen, it's hard to prove they're real if you made them up.

Numerous other people in this thread have corroborated what I said. Go pick a fight with one of them and tell them they didn't see what they saw.

Remember the 4 year arguement over Trump's taxes in New York? The NY AG, Letitia James has had Trump's taxes for 2 years now and hasn't prosecuted. And this. Multiple persons subpoenaed by the Jan6 commission have thumbed their noses at the committee and have done so with impunity. Every single one is still on the streets and still trying to overturn the 2020 election. There's a whole lotta talk but zero action.

Prove it then. Honest to God. I live in Standale. You show me where the flags are and I will go and I will burn them.

I don't have to prove anything to you. Just because you don't personally see it doesn't mean other people's observations and experiences aren't real. Why do you feel this weird need to fight people over this?

Two other people in this thread besides me have confirmed that there are a LOT of Confederate flags in Michigan. There's one less than three blocks from my house affixed to a broken down trailer that also has a "fark Biden" flag flying from it. I don't have to "prove" this to you.

West Michigan here.  I've only lived here for 18 months, and there are a lot more rednecks and confederate flags here than there were in Kansas (KC).  I can't say if it's trending up or down here, just that we're not running low on assholes.

zappaisfrank: LL316: buster_v: Michigan is starting to shake off the stink of  conservative bullshiat

I was just in the West side of Michigan visiting the in laws for a few weeks. I saw more Confederate flags there than I do in GA.

I live in the same part of the state, and yeah, this...

I was thrilled to head into GR for the day (Founders still makes sandwiches as good as their beer, fwiw) and was thrilled to finally see some non white people. If you're thrilled at the incredible diversity of Grand Rapids, the bar has been set horribly low. Newaygo County is an awful place.

No shiat.  She was all excited about abortion being illegal everywhere (she converted to Catholicism for her husband and really embraced it) and was trying to rub it in my liberal face.  So I had to tell her how she was wrong.  Now I have to tell her that, yes, a Judge can put a hold on enforcing a law if they think it might be unconstitutional, and yes, States have their own Constitutions, and no, SCOTUS didn't decide anything about Michigan's constitution.  Basically, I have to explain Marbury, the 9th, and the 10th to her.

I'm in Traverse City.  There is a lot of blue up here but it's normally wealthier people so they are almost outvoted by the idiots in trailers.  I saw this out by Lake Arbutus last summer.

I lived in Michigan as a kid and came back as an adult. Things are changing here, it just depends where you look. In the metro Detroit area, you have suburban areas that are becoming more popular and attracting young liberal families. My district, for example, used to be ruby red but now it's blue.

Of course, some areas have slipped the wrong direction. Macomb Co, for example, used to be blue-collar working class Dems and now they've lost their minds to MAGA. They were at the convention center in Detroit "protesting" after Election Day 2020. But they also cleared out before dark because, you know, "Detroit is scary at night."

So yeah, things have changed, but I'm not too worried about Big Gretch's chances considering who she's up against.

51 years in Michigan (though to be fair, I only remember about 44 of them) and I have to drive all over the state for my job, and I can confirm that once you get out of bigger towns and cities and into the rural areas you'll find lots of Confederate flags, Gadsden flags, Let's Go Brandon signs/flags, TRUMP 2024 signs, Proud Boy bumper stickers, III%er window stickers, and all sorts of white supremacist, fascist bullshiat.

I mean, if great_tigers would like me to snap some photos on my next work trip, I'll do it. The only thing making it a problem is that I'd have to stop a lot to take the shots, and it would likely send these paranoid right-wing farks into a frenzy seeing me photograph their trucks and yards.

I can also confirm something else that's happening in Michigan: When you get outside of the cities and bigger towns into the rural, heavily conservative areas, you'll hear a lot of Michigan-born folks talking in a faux southern accent. I guess at this point we'd could call it a R.A.P.E. - Redneck American Patriot English. It's not quite a real southern accent, but it has the same general twang, flow, mispronunciations, and cadence. I'm not entirely sure if it's an affectation they've adopted to legitimize themselves with each other, or if it's a naturally-occurring phenomenon in which they all just started migrating to this accent because of the media they consume and company they keep.

Anyway, yes. Get into the Thumb, or the middle of the state north of Lansing, or "up north", or either side of Flint, or anywhere where the cow population is higher than the human population and you'll see a lot of MAGA rednecks embracing the Confederate flag (or worse; I see more than a few Nazi-adjacent flags on my trips) and signaling their intention to vote for Trump in 2024.

It's not a small amount at all. And we all know they don't give a shiat about the Confederacy or "southern pride"... They're waving those flags because they're racist, fascist farkers.
