I never met him or corresponded with him in any way. I just listened to his music and appreciated his skill.

I saw Soundgarden in Toronto the night that the Rodney King riots started. The venue was a bit from downtown where all the ruckus was happening. I can't remember who opened but Fishbone was in town and Angelo Moore played a couple songs on the theremin with them.

Saw him at a bridge concert in 2014. I'm not usually a ballad guy, but halfway through the song below, I quickly became a ballad guy. A performance I'll never forget. RIP, rock star dude.

We didn't lose him.  I know exactly where he is -- the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

I remember that morning like it was 10 minutes ago.  I've never been anything of a guitar player; I can do some fingerpicking stuff but my fretting is awful.  I sang in a band for 6 years though.  I remember that all I could think of to do was learn Seasons.  I did essentially nothing else for 3 days, Until I could play it and sing it at the same time well enough to be considered "public performance-ready".  My band got back together for one night a couple of weeks ago (long story) and we ended the evening with my rendition of that song.

Josh Klinghoffer's rendition of Seasons from that night still makes me cry every time I hear it.

The Pretty Reckless had Cameron and Thayil from Soundgarden on "Only Love Can Save Me Now" from their most recent album (damn good rock album all things told). It's basically Soundgarden with Momsen singing. They were on tour with Chris the night he killed himself, like right after a show in Detroit.

Probably NSFW in some places...

It just shows, you're better off making everybody else miserable rather than yourself.

RIP Chris.  I saw Soundgarden in late '96, not too long before the group broke up.  I remember that the venue had police officers stationed at the sides of the stage and at one point Chris said something like "Thank a cop.  Or shoot 'em", and then he stared at one of the officers.  Not sure what that was about, but it seemed like a dick move to say that. In retrospect, it sounds like they were burned out on touring with each other at that point.

I can't speak to the veracity of this story, but here we go, anyway.

It starts with Johnny Cash covering "Rusty Cage", and the response from Cornell being "even I never got the depth of that song until I heard it sung by The Man". Seems it got Cornell to re-evaluate songs independent of the singer, because after that was when he started playing stuff like "Nothing Compares" and "Billi Jean". Both of which are so drastically different from the originals, but come with just as much (if not more) heart felt emotion.

His was a voice built for emoting, and that only comes from experience

They opened for Soundgarden on the night Chris killed himself.

Cornell was certainly loved by his peers. You can get lost on youtube just going through the tribute covers from bands all over the spectrum.

I saw him on his Higher Truth tour which was maybe 6 or 8 months before his death. Absolutely amazing in that setting - just him, an acoustic guitar, and a backing musician (mostly cello) in a theater that added even more magic to his voice. I can still remember the awe of it.

One of the most powerful voices I've ever heard. I wore out a Superunknown CD back in the day.

Arguably the best Bond theme ever.

I was only a marginal fan until I saw him live.  It was in 2007 in a small venue of only a couple thousand people.  It was just Chris, no Soundgarden or Audioslave (although he did some of their songs).

After that show I was a big fan.  Easily the best singer I've ever seen live.

I saw Soundgarden as part of Guns 'n' Roses Use Your Illusion Tour in 1992 in Manchester (UK).

The stage was set with G'N'R logos and icons and a giant floor mat with the G'N'R logo on it. G'N'R themselves were late because Axl had a hangover and missed the flight from France, so the crowd were pretty pissed off with them. Chris Cornell spent their time dicking around and taking the micky out of the G'N'R stuff on stage, hiding under the floor mat and popping out from under it (all while still singing - the man was a professional!). He seemed to sum up the pissed-off-with-G'N'R mood of the crowd and instantly became the hero for everyone there.

Also, his Bond theme was the best.

That's all.
