I knew it wasn't South Dakota, but that was my first thought. My second guess was Alabama. I always forget about Mississippi.

Then I remembered Kristi Noems embarrassing "Meth. We're on it" anti meth campaign. And I realized, that yeah, there are an insane amount of incredibly skinny tweakers in the state. Or an incredible amount of insane, skinny tweakers. I almost wonder if the meth heads took it as a source of pride.

And people wonder why there is such a push to make being fat socially acceptable in the world

A real human figure is perfectly fine. A 250 pounder is not for women. Nor is it for most men unless you are like 6 foot 8 or taller. And considering how much of a benefit a simple daily walk does for ones health, there is no real excuse for those people. Spike their insurance rates and laugh at them when they say it hurts their feelings to be called what they are. Its their lifestyle choices that led them there, not anything else

Well, Hawaiians view themselves as the least obese.

Which sounds right, because in Hawaii it takes a bit to considered obese.

Yes California and New York ,the poorest states are the fattest.
It could have something to do with not having the money to shop at Whole Foods and to buy a gym membership while processed foods are the cheapest.

I wonder if maybe California and New York companies can do anything to help their employees have a better chance of living a better life.

What if it's not their choice? Like they have other health issues that prevent them from exercising. Conditions that messed up their thyroid or other issues where they really struggle to lose weight. I knew a very big lady who swam a mile a day and only ate a slice of unbuttered toast for breakfast. She really watched what she ate. Her metabolism was messed up from other health issues. I sure as heck wouldn't mock that lady for her weight. You never know what someone else struggles with.

There is missing data or misrepresentation in her life story.  While people have different metabolisms, etc...  what you have described for that woman is fully unbelievable.  No matter how one gets there, it's always food absorbed vs energy expenditure.

That, all of it.

When I'm in 'Murica, I don't walk enough but I eat really well.  Tons of veggies and smaller portions of lean proteins.   I dropped close to 70lbs that way.  When I'm in Dublin I walk everywhere, but generally eat like crap.  Way too much bread and my carb budget is usually blown before lunch.   But I don't gain.

American cities generally aren't "walkable."  We have accommodated the car for so long that no one walks anywhere.    We also subsidize the wrong foods.  We should be subsidizing greens and veggies to the point where they are dirt cheap, instead of grains like corn.   Our priorities are upside down.

Then she needs to eat less and move more.  "A slice of toast for breakfast" doesn't mean anything if you're pounding down three cheeseburgers for lunch and a big old plate of pasta for dinner.   "Swimming" for fat people might be good on the knees, but it doesn't burn huge amounts of calories because... fat floats.

Every single fat person I know that "just couldn't lose weight" had this innate ability to disconnect what they stuffed down their gullets and the fat on their ass.

Cushing's disease from over-exposure to steroids - in the case of my knowledge someone that they tried to treat Crohn's disease with those for way too long.  You are quite literally going to be fat, and you're going to be stuck that way, regardless of what you eat unless you starve.  Not in the, "I'm hungry" sense but in the literal, "You are not eating enough to sustain life" sense.  Other steroidal problems have similar issues

We need to knock off the fat acceptance bullshiat while addressing the actual causes of an obesity epidemic (it isn't 100% just mayo-titty lardcakes mcgee's fault, but enough of % to feel okay going tough-love drill sergeant - including on myself). Saw people mentioning how US society has built itself around personal vehicles instead of walking or combo walking/public transit. Things like food deserts. General sugary crap/corn syrup diet. Massive portions. Etcetera, etcetera. It's enough to make one reconsider that whole crazy conspiracy to make people fat and stupid.

I don't drive. My grocery store isn't close. But I take a backpack and walk back with it full.

Still fat.

And a few years ago I lost a ton of weight drinking and only eat quiche.  It was odd. I was convinced I was going to die.

I don't know about cushings, but the two people I know with Chron's lost weight when they adjusted their diets to accommodate it.  Because they weren't stuffing tons of carbohydrate down their gullet any more.

In any case, America's obesity problem isn't a function of treatable disease.  It's a function of shiatty diet and not enough exercise.   And while I am sure you think your fat ass is a function of the former, I'm pretty sure it is a function of the later.   You can pick all the outliers you like.   The big part of the distribution isn't changing.

It's really disappointing to see access to affordable mental health counseling and emotional maturity classes in schools are not part of the discussions on addressing obesity.  The items to address in this article are symptoms and not root causes.

Dr Kathy Knight, a registered dietitian and associate professor at Mississippi University, previously said her state may have such high obesity rates because it is 'very rural'.
'That doesn't afford a lot of public exercise places. There's not a lot of sidewalks, and most southerners are still skeptical of bike lanes,' she said in a statement.

You really think adding bike lanes would be the thing someone morbidly obese needs to kickstart them?  She should have her license revoked.  You really think most morbidly obese would want to be seen biking down the street, given (as FARK always proves) fat shaming is still considered OK, even for people trying to lose weight?  Bike lanes are a piece of the puzzle sure, but it's more important to know why that person overeats - are there underlying mental health needs that need to be addressed?  Addressing those are more important than bike lanes, as well as helps address any underlying self-esteem and body image issues (and deal with the fat shaming that will inevitably come if they attempt to exercise in public).  Do you know what very rural places also don't have, especially in the south?  Mental health counselors.

Yep, I'm sure a clinically depressed person barely able to cope with life will be able to consistently put in the effort with no support for their mental health just because you said someone can just do it.

The most successful weight loss strategy for me has never been starving myself. I worked on getting good foods into myself instead so I was less vulnerable to binging ice cream, fries, etc. Eating well can be expensive, but adding green peas, beans, and whole grain brown rice is affordable.
