Is metal in the genes? It's a question science had yet to answer,

No, I'm sure it's just nepotism but that's cool.

Has the offspring of a famous musician ever become bigger than their parent? I'm struggling to think of any. I know lots that have gone into music and carved out comfortable, if not stable but less than stellar, careers.... but anyone outshine the old man?

They named the kids' bands, and buried the parents' in the text. Quite annoying.

I thought the same.  One of them was named "Matlock" and it took some reading to realize one of the Sex Pistol's was named Matlock and that Andy Griffith did not have a secret life as a thrash metal musician.

This. Which is why statements like

Wolfgang Van Halen has avoided taking the easy route to fame, carving out his own path with Mammoth WVH

and being told Wolfgang isn't trading on his father's name and fame are bullshiat. He's using his dad's band's name and adding the Van Halen initials to make sure you know exactly where he's coming from.

Bono and Ali Hewson's kid Elijah is the lead singer of Inhaler. Yeah, I know, "U2 sucks," but they don't really and neither does Inhaler.

Man, he sounds like his dad when he was young.

I wonder if Elijah could work out a deal with U2 whereby he'd lease the back catalog and he could form U2.0 and spend the next 40 years touring and writing new music and paying his dad snd the old retired guys royalties + bonuses based on hitting certain goals?

Sean is crazy good. Very talented. I'll listen to his stuff over The Beatles any day. In fairness though, he's better as a collaborator than a solo artist.

Whatever Dino, Desi & Billy may have lacked, producing them is what brough Lee Hazlewood to the attention of Frank Sinatra. That lead to Hazlewood working with Nancy Sinatra, a partnership that burned as brightly as anything else in the 1960's.

He's making an homage to his dad that very few people will get, and the WVH are HIS initials.  Considering that the band is him - he played every instrument - he could have just as easily named it "Wolf Van Halen."  But, if you didn't know that he was Eddie's kid, then Mammoth WVH is in no way coattail riding.

Nope, not buying it. If he wanted to be his own man he wouldn't have added his initials to his band's name. He put WVH so every one would know the connection to Van Halen in an effort to boost his sales and air play.

You see this in sports all the time, a clear sign that athletics is definitely genetic. You see it in acting and politics, but I think that's mostly nepotism (both are very insular fields -- you need connections to make it). But you hardly ever see it in music, an indication that music success is mostly due to luck.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is led by Robert Levon Been, son of Michael Been of The Call.  The Call had a few hits, BMRC has like 10 albums out.
