I know a guy who had something similar happen. Joe bought a couple paintings in France in the early '70s for $100 USD. The store keeper didn't know who did them, but Joe just liked the way they looked.  Back in California, he decided to get them cleaned.  Got a call from the restorer, "Do you know what you have here?"  One painting was from a 17th century painter.  He got $245,000 for it.  The other painting was modern.
