I liked that show's bass line when he did his stand up.

James has been a mess since St. Anger came out like a million years ago. Seems like he needs a hobby, or maybe a Fark account.

That's f*cking bad ass - 1) he said it out loud in front of thousands of fans and 2) his band mates supported him.

Rock the f*ck on.
(Insofar as you can rock. I admit I stopped listening after the third album because, well, ahem. But rock the f*ck on anyway)

If you were already struggling and then woke up to the realization you're the lead singer of Metallica and you're co-headlining Boston Calling with Avril Lavigne, it makes you question things.
Is it over?  Was it it ever real to begin with?

The 90s albums* would be great hard rock albums...if they were done by anyone other than Metallica.

\*except for Re-Load, that was obviously B-side city
\\and I stopped listening when Jason left, I don't think I'll ever regret that decision

As a young 80's metal kid, Hetfield was a virtual deity to me.

Turns out he's human after all.

I applaud him for facing his demons. What I don't applaud him for is being a RWNJ who uprooted his family from California to move to Colorado. Because MAH FREEDUMS!1 For being the guy who railed against the evils of religion (raised a Christian Scientist- no doctors) and now has a "Faith" (in Ford logo font) tattoo.

Yep.  They took out their grief on him.  Newsted never tried to usurp Burton.  That was all in Lars and James head.

I stopped listening at St Anger but it is foolish to think that a band whose members are almost 60 and now multi millionaires would write the same music they did 30 years ago. Also the same people who hate what they did to Napster are also the same ones who now tear Spotify apart for not paying the artist enough of per download.

A younger me would have scoffed at this.  Now, a 47 year old Metallica fan, I think it's beautiful how my community has aged collectively and supports each other.

And for those of you who gave up on them decades ago and think Metallica can't be metal anymore, this is from their last album and it's as heavy as anything else from their first albums:

Hey, at least he didn't pick up a gun and head down to the local super market, to resolve his mental issues. And to boot, those around him were supportive.

We need more of this and less mockery.

I wouldn't call it "mockery" per se (at least my post). My only issue with Hetfield is that he's traded one awful addiction for another. And this one is, IMHO, worse. Another metal musician addict lost to Jebus.

Meh, in all the interviews I've seen I can't remember him ever getting religious or political. And he doesn't get preachy in any of their songs. If he is a right-wing jesus freak he's pretty good about keeping it to himself.

With his vaccine skepticism (although he did vaccinate), it seems he did retain some Christian Science values.

And yet not as good as their live Korean show. And, also why was the sound so lame and farked on their 40 anniversary that was actually a commercial for a streaming service.

Because those are in fact different.  Trading music and selling a streaming service are absolutely different.
Spotify should in fact pay as much a radio.

Nothing but love to the dude for being honest.

I played in a metal band in my early 20s.

I'll be turning 40 soon and the thought of doing the whole metal thing (especially the lyrics) at this point is mega cringe.

Not to be an asshole but, don't those guys have more than enough to retire with a significant degree of comfort?

It's cool to throw in the towel, cash the checks, and enjoy life.

If I could retire today, I 100% would.

Here's the issue with the newer stuff.

It really is great. And that's the problem. They were always capable of producing great metal albums, and they simply chose not to. Hetfield is the guy that bragged that they could fart into mics and it would go platinum.

Load was mostly mediocre with the exception of a few songs. Reload is simply awful, and almost irredeemable. And then they had the audacity to sue their own fans after they made terrible albums, and basically bragged about it.

The new albums irrefutably prove that they were always capable of writing great material. They just didn't want to do it. And that makes me like them even less.
