Just rename it. Dr. Who ended in 2016 and the writing for the reboot was just horrible. Similar to what happened to Top Gear after the stars left.

Is this going to be a regular thing, or are they back to the "new alien per episode" format?

Let's see some of RTDs new season before we make a judgement call.

It's like they deliberately picked the most extreme photo of her they could find.

/Should have bought back Martha. She got the worst storyline.

I never liked Rose. I don't want to see her return, whether played by Billie Piper or by someone else. I also question whether or not there are more stories of significance that can be done with her. She's already had a lot a major drama.

Carter Pewterschmidt: Should have bought back Martha. She got the worst storyline.

Martha I did like. I agree that bringing her back would be a good thing. There's far more that can still be done with her character.

They probably picked that picture because in it she kinda looks like she has Billie Piper's huge jaw.

As for what they are doing it seems pretty obvious.  Chasing the popularity of the multiverse.  Maybe Rose Leslie will make a guest appearance as Mickey Smith. Just to keep the Rose theme going.

She's brilliant in Heartstopper.

She's also pretty important in the politics of the moment: I had no idea the actual actress was transgender, only the character. It's the sort of pretty typical transgender person in the real world, and exactly the type of person the JK Rowlings of this world want to use their "birth gender" bathrooms, and shows what a completely ridiculous idea that is.

They seem to have the impression that transgender people are like Les Dawson in drag from the 1970s, rather than the pretty much innocuous people they actually are.

This sort of mass demonstration of that ludicrous notion is important. This obviously touches on the politically charged idea that "passing" somehow makes some "validly transgender" or not, but it's the sort of thing that's necessary to make a chunk of the population realise that entire monster-under-the-bed story they've been sold by TERFs is gibberish.

Top Gear ended over a decade before it became popular in the US, when it was actually about cars and not ludicrous spectacle.

2) Isn't the entire conceit of Doctor Who that it IS new stuff every few years? New cast, new people, new ideas, but dressed up with familiar names, enemies, and so on?

It's been shiat since Angela Rippon quit.

Besides, the current incarnation of TG is alright. I think it clicked for me in the episode where McGuinness binned a Lambo, and I think it was the same episode that had Flintoff hitting 200 mph in an old Jaaag, against the advice of the health and safety advisors. Added quite a lot of jeopardy to the whole endeavour.

And it must be doing OK, because it's moved to BBC One for the first time since the Clarkson-era reboot.

She's also now an adult woman of 40, rather than playing a borderline teen. She was going to radically different anyway, even without the curious surgery.

Yes, and she (as far as I'm aware) has never disparaged gay people in the manner she has been transgender people over the last year.

I don't believe this actress is gay either, just transgender.

Whenever they try that, the fans moan and complain that they want the old, familiar stuff. And they're already losing their shiat over this. It might not even be the same Rose, anyway. If her last name's not Tyler, it's not "their" Rose.

I'm not saying she hasn't had some major work done (her teeth were always... a lot. Who knows what might have actually been medically required), just that most women who leave the public eye for over a decade look very different when they return.

Yeah, maybe they're right and Rose Tyler's been recast, but "new Rose" might also just mean the new companion will have a similar "most special" personality or will-they won't-they romance with the Doctor.

Whatever the plan is, I'm not encouraged by this. I liked Billie Piper, but the Doctor/Rose drama got really insufferable, and it was kind of a relief when she left the show. I really hope RTD isn't planning to repeat all that.

I've been watching old Who on Pluto, the ones I watched as a kid, and the new stuff just isn't as fun. I am old. Trek is a mess, the last Star Wars was mess. I stopped watching DW about halfway through Capaldi. I'd rather see completely new stuff instead of retcon after retcon.

Seconded. Absolutely couldn't stand Rose Tyler, other than being decently physically attractive there was practically nothing of interest there. And that was made all the worse by having every surrounding character, including the Doctor, talk about Rose as if she was the most amazing bestest thing ever in the whole entire universe. Every episode where she was a primary focus was like watching 45 minutes of people talking about how gruel is just so wonderfully flavorful.

I don't care if they're "recasting" her (though I don't really want to see Billie Piper return either). Just move the f*ck on already and stop resurrecting the same tired character who has already been done to death.

Like so so many others too.
I find this has to be one of the lamest generations for artistic endeavors of all kinds.

The movies the kids watch today, are the same IP and even same repeated stories that were my childhood.
And the kids all sport band t-shirts, oif the bands i grew up with in the 80's and 90's.

They were the shirts of the bands we wore, not the bands of their own generation. And the movies are all the same no new something they can claim as their own.

I hated Rose's character. Just absolutely despised her.  I really liked Eccleston as the Doctor, but she made the show such a drag.  When they had the regeneration, I was hoping that she would get changed out as well, but no, we have to make her even more special. Ugh...

My friend drug me to the Day of the Doctor special at the theaters, I just about walked out when I saw Rose was involved.

The point is not that she's had work done - it's that she's had bad, face-altering work done.

Most people in entertainment get work done. There's the good (Tom Cruise) the bad (Meg Ryan) and the ugly (Mickey Rourke). Billie fits the second category - obvious and poor work - her jawline and lips are Jenna Jameson-level bad. And those other folks in the list above are 10-15 years older than her. She needs to dial that back before she goes full uncanny valley.

I've read she's had a pretty crappy life. Wouldn't trade with her. Pretty sad, tbh.

A gay black doctor AND a trans companion?

Overcorrecting a lack of representation might turn off some otherwise on-the-fence minds.

I don't really care. Only thing shocking to me are those eyebrows.

I hope they knock the writing out of the park, or the show, (which IMO should go away for a while anyways,) might be forced to end by the BBC if not pulling in viewing numbers, and it's the gay and trans direction that will be blamed.

It's a show made for teenagers. This is *exactly* the issue of the moment the bulk of teens care about.
