"This time around, Ford is considering reviving the Thunderbird as a somewhat indirect Corvette rival"

Sounds like somewhat bullshiat.

The early Thunderbirds were sporty cars. Then, as companies do, it was turned into "The ThunderBarge"

The last design kinda looks like a modern EV

It's an even dumber idea now than it was in 2002. Septuagenarians will comment on how cute they are to the salesman, reminisce about the T-Bird their parents had, and then drive off in an Escape.

It's going to be an electric SUV with a retro coupe painted on the side. Just like the Mustang Mach-E.

common sense is an oxymoron: It's going to be an electric SUV with a retro coupe painted on the side. Just like the Mustang Mach-E.

Ford should make one last awesome convertible with a internal combustion engine. A Mustang throwback with a manual transmission and a modern 302. We are coming to the end of an amazing era, and it should be celebrated!

I really like the late 80's design. Wish they'd stuck with it. It was a sedan, but it had style. As a tall guy, I can't fit in the little sports cars, but this one would fit me fine, and still leave most other cars in the dust.

I had one of the 1978 models in high school. I love T-birds, but that one was just silly.16 feet long, got about 7mpg. Surprisingly little trunk space. The headlight covers were fun.

C'mon man, make the damned thing a BOAT, like the originals, like the pictures above. Put a gazillion kwh of batteries under that massive hood so that it has a 600+ mile range. Heated and ventilated front and back seats, the whole nine yards, Give us a farking luxury land yacht. It would be glorious!

/and then not sell because it would be over $100k and "ugly" and huge...

I had a 90 or 91 with the V6. Was a lot of fun to drive. And the V6, while obviously not as much power still moved well. And of course better MPG.

I doubt Ford is going to pony up (sorry) for a custom platform to build a high-dollar, low-volume halo car. I think they'll bolt a new body onto either the Mustang platform (not likely) or the Mustang Mach-E platform (much more likely). So a Mustang Mach-E with more power, all the options boxes checked, and a $90,000 sticker? Just don't call it a badge engineered money grab.

Stop by your friendly Ford dealer and ask about the Mach 1 Mustang.  It might take six months to get one, but you'll get one.

Yup. Replace the rearing hossie with a leaping cat, and it's a Jaguar SUV. Without the hossie, it's almost impossible to tell which company actually makes it.

A racier body style on the Mach E chassis would be a hit And makes sense.

But more power?  I've been in the GT version of the Mach E.  It's blindingly quick.   Any more power than that and you'd need a Top Fuel license from the NHRA.

Which makes me wonder what the roads will be like once these things hit the used car market with more obtainable pricing.

So, here's how this works:

Mustang - ICE-V6
Mustang GT - ICE-V8
Not-an-SVT-Cobra-R: ICE-V8, twin front wheel engines
E-Mach: EV
Thunderbird: "indirect Corvette fighter"="Tesla P80D fighter"

/Thunderbird for an electric car is possibly the best name you could own. Just slap a bird filled and outlined with lightning (on a floating OLED plate for "Ooooohh" factor) Shove an electric at each wheel, one ahead of those, and you have a Tesla fighter. From, possibly, the only company that makes electric motors that don't spontaneously explode.
