Until someone figures out how you can wear a headset for as long as you can stare at a monitor, the "metaverse" has an uphill climb. They're going to need something eyeglass weight to make it work.

Yeah, burning $10B a year since that Xmas burst in 2016 hasn't grown the market beyond a residue of people the tech fits and are still into the relatively small things it can do. Last year they tried to duck tape the hardware to the grift coins and NFTulips, and that has burned like suspected insurance fraud. You can shelve it next to 3D TV and the Nintendo Virtualboy.

Oh, and Portal was a dumb idea. It's selling people hardware to run something that should be an app. Same thing for Alexa, devices should be dumb and run from an app on extant hardware.

It's not the lurid details subby but the never-ending torrent of shiate memes and thoughtful looking statements from right-wing profiteers that really bring the money in.

As an uncle myself I have to say that I find this stereotype of the racist uncle a wee bit insulting.

Your racist uncle's browser history is still a gold mine, so Facebook is still using it to con him into buying survival food buckets and let's go Brandon flags. It's the metaverse engineers that being let go, apparently there aren't enough suckers buying into whatever the hell the metaverse is.

Just don't be racist. Problem solved.

It would be a tiny market if they just made Alexa an app.

An Echo Show 5 is $85 and Amazon usually discounts it more. What kind of hardware can you buy for less than that to run an IoT operating system and an includes a touchscreen, speaker, and mic array? And also how much it your time worth to get it up and running?

I know there's plenty of hate for Meta, but Half life Alyx on the Quest 2 (with a cpu running it) is phenomenal to someone who grew up playing arcade games.

As for racist relatives - we already knew.

As for the impending meta-verse - wtf is that?

The hardware for VR does have a long way to go - but I don't believe for a second that facebook (and everyone else trying to sell stuff) cares about VR 1% as much as they care about developing AR and XR to layer advertising over the entire physical world.

I'm still getting the glasses, though.

It makes me happy when media refuse to let Zuckerberg rebrand as "meta" and leave his facebook history behind.

I recently played Half Life Alyx in VR using an Occulus headset.  After about 10 minutes I felt nauseous and disoriented.  Felt sick for hours after taking the thing off as well.
But sure Zuck, everyone will pony up thousands of dollars to hang out in your virtual strip mall.

Metaverse will never be a thing.

VR headsets, however, are farking awesome.

Next time you fly on a plane, take your headset. You bob up and down in the VR world as the plane moves! Take a couple shots of booze and go fishing while flying lol. It's really, really surreal to be in VR executing Order 66 and killing Jedi children, then take off your headset and get a can of tomato juice from the stewardess. Everyone looks so sleepy and miserable!

Seriously, try it out on a plane

This kind of thing is not new, but it only happens to a few people. I have no issues when I use my Quest.

That said, I managed to snag one early enough that I don't need a fb account to use it.

Yeh I'm glad I don't get the sickness feeling, and got one early enough that it's not tied to FB.
Although having said that I haven't used it in nearly 2 years now, so who knows if it even works
