Federal laws against racial discrimination in hiring don't apply to private employers with fewer than 15 employees. Virginia's laws against hiring discrimination don't apply to private employers with fewer than 6 employees. So as long as he doesn't need more than five people on staff he's fine.

Wasn't this a story a month or two ago?

I'm assuming its when he first signed the contract on the place.

Either that or there was a very similar story not too long ago.

We caught this when it aired last night.  Was really cool.

And the guy plans on restoring the slave cemetery and opening the property for education/research too.

Am I getting too cynical if I think this story has been spun a bit? It's too big a coincidence. He knew about the house's history and that's why he bought it.

stoli n coke: Hopefully, the original owners are looking up and seeing this development.

If there is a family graveyard on the plot, I would build a row of outhouses over it.

I remember going to a wedding for a cousin of my wife, that was held on the grounds of a resort that had once been a SC plantation, and while we were touring the grounds of the original mansion, we came across a plot that had a bunch of small stone headstones with only first names on them  and very short lifespans.   With a bit of horror I asked the docent if I had found the slave's graveyard.   No, he assured me, that was far away at the edge of the grounds in an off-limits area, and it now just a field, because the wooden markers had all succumbed to the elements.  No, what I saw  near the main house was the graveyard for the former owner's beloved hunting hounds.   Somehow that made it much worse.

Me so thorny: Antebellum, OK, but Mansion? I'm guessing 4 bed 2 bath.

I live near a lot of pre-civil war architecture right now (the town was founded before the county was...my literal next door neighbor is an AME Zion church built in 1867 by the local people of color who'd be damned if they would be sit in the "Slave Galleys"  in the then hundred-year old Old Stone Church at the other end of town)  Houses were much smaller then  even the grand mansions of the super rich  rarely ran to more than 3000 sq ft or so

Or you just do what bigger companies do, you never admit what you're doing. "Not a team player," "other candidates had better references," etc.

Bedrooms were a lot smaller, too, because it was harder to heat large areas. Could be six bedrooms up in that place.

I hope he has a light saber and a Darth Vader suit.  And I hope he goes to the family graveyard and regularly announces:

"Now, I am the master,"

I mean, I would.  But sometimes nightmares about sand and lava trigger a secondary personality.

This family is quite fortunate. Most African-American families will never not only know what part of the motherland their people are from, but any part of who they were before the Civil War - even if their ancestors had been here since the 1600s.

Of course there's no reason to keep records of farm animals/tools except for sale or purchase, right?

This is in contrast to the descendants of those who enslaved them, who in many cases can just look up church birth records in their family's European country of origin, and whose lineage has been meticulously cataloged in databases.
