Running what is essentially a variety TV show is not easy.

He wrote me a prescription, he said, "You are depressed
But I'm glad you came to see me to get this off your chest
Come back and see me later, next patient, please
Send in another victim of industrial disease"

I have a few ideas about YouTube channels, and might strap a GoPro to my something for a one off video. But I worry my ideas are nulls, and would I want to keep doing them even if they were popular. Doing something you don't like because it's $3 per thousand views might be a trap. But then again, if you stumble onto something that's good for F U money...

Man I am way out of the loop. The only names in that article I recognized was Jenna Marbles, and I'm not sure why I recognize her, and PewDiPie, but only because I've heard stories surrounding him. I don't know if I've ever knowingly watched a video by either.

I would say YouTube gets their money for nothing, and clicks for free whenever they decide to demonetize anything something smarter than an 8 year-old could understand and whenever the copywrite bots go around striking everything.

this. My family watch a fair amount of some channels consistently. There is a team of video editors, promoters, etc. behind them.  It may seem that SSSniperwolf is only spending an hour reacting to other videos to get a 7 min video each day, but someone had to curate the videos, someone had to edit the film, add effects, etc.

Yes, one person can do all of that, but you would get burnt out once the volume goes up.

FGTVee and SML are other examples of how one person really cannot maintain, as you well put, a variety show.

Most of all, I've found that YouTubers tend to view other people and situations in black and white, divided between what's good for themselves as individual creators and outside forces that wish them harm. They are often distrustful of institutions and organizations, particularly the media, whom they feel antagonize creators because newsrooms are scared they'll be replaced by them

Ugh. UGH. That editing style of removing all pauses in dialogue is absolutely atrocious.

YouTube is just a big How-To channel for me. If I need to fix something, there's always a (or many) video about my very specific problem. I also watch the "maker" channels, woodworking, cooking and beer making mostly these days. It's a valuable resource. These super popular creators mystify me, but mostly I'm not even exposed to them as YT's algorithms know that this 60 year old dude would not be interested in PewDePie, stupid prank videos or any of that other vapid content.

/watch somebody play video games? Why the fark would I do that?
//watch a guy build a model of the Eiffel Tower from popsicle sticks? Fark yeah!
///smash that like button!

good point. i too am an old gummer that has found YT Videos very helpful. i knew nothing about motor scooters but was able to bring a dead one back to running sold condition. whatever you need to know, it seems, has been mapped out on video for you. it's nice people contribute for the sake of others.

TIL that advertising began with youtube. And before advertising, everybody was happy all the time, and their three favorite things were church, school and dear ol' dad.

Just to offer some prospective, slashies 1 and 2 of yours can be the same thing.

My kids will watch other people build things in minecraft. Then an hour later they are imitating what they saw and then improvising.

People watch sports all the time to learn how to do things, then insert that knowledge into when they play the sport themselves. Same for people watching other people play things like CoD, Rocket League, etc.

Not saying that there isn't vapid trash out there, but how-to-video-game is an overlap.

No one hates their audience more than Youtubers.  There always comes a point where they have to make a video about how they hate doing what they do.

"I hate doing this and I hate all of you.  Anyway, here are the top 10 biblical inaccuracies in the A-team."
