This is callous, but the Afghans had their chance to defend their modern way of life. There can be a million debates about shaping the nation of Afghanistan externally, but to put it bluntly NATO and the US failed. We knew we failed at least a decade back. We knew they were going to collapse when the west left. We gave them the best option to evacuate when we did, but so many without the means are trapped. My heart goes out to them, but it is hardened by their absolute failure to defend themselves. We see what a motivated, NATO and US trained nation can do in Ukraine. But I guess what we all failed to realize or acknowledge was the lack of an Afghan Nation, but I had hoped to see a modicum of resistance from the everyday population.

Why would "red states" have women wear too much coverings? Sure they're usually religious, but that doesn't mean they abhor beauty and femininity. They show off their sexy curves and wear bikinis and other revealing outfits, just like how the fat acceptance movement does. Some people are religious, but some are TOO religious to the point that they cover themselves up so as to not titilate.

"But this week, just nine months after the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan and pledged to respect the rights of women, their Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice announced that all women must be covered from head to toe, preferably in a burqa, and always accompanied by a male."

Who is the bigger moron, the person who believed the Taliban when they said they would respect the rights of women or the people who are shocked when the Taliban went back on its word?

I mean, you're factually incorrect, but you do raise a good point:

People are far less-ugly when wearing masks.  Masking up is only a net positive for personal and social beauty, so maybe we should be mandating masks, just to save ourselves from all the uggos.

Living in one of the bluest regions in the entire country, I wish we had a mandate.  Blue or Red, we're all Americans, and Americans are fuggos.  Mandate masks before eye bleach becomes in short supply!

Although Biden was under no obligation to honor what an ex-prez that incited an insurgency that led to deaths agreed to do.

Or he could have set a sane timetable like the commanders over there wanted.

Instead he pushed for a panic retreat that led to more deaths and the people being ground under taliban boots.

This is a bit of bitterness on my part but, you know? The US and UN coalition partners tried. Maybe they didn't do the right things, maybe they didn't try hard enough, maybe they trusted the wrong people - but they set up schools for girls, had women in government and the military, held elections, and so on.

Yeah, the US was a shiatty invader coming to change their culture, because their culture farking sucks and they supported Bin Laden who set up and executed a series of terrorist attacks US embassies and so on culminating in 9/11.

So, you know, I feel really sorry for the women. But what the fark can anyone do? It's true in the US too - I'll tell you, if you're afraid of the country becoming hostile to your rights, arm up. We got lots of AR-15s. Protesting will do jack shiat. You have to fight for your rights.

Nobody else is likely to give you freedom, and if they do you better take it in both hands and defend it.

Clothing is part of bodily autonomy.

Difficulty: how to prevent their family, congregation, or personal relationships from forcing them to wear the hijab.

Determining individual volition is nearly impossible.

The Taliban had a slight impact on the timetable of the withdrawal. Biden had already delayed the pullout, how much longer do you think the Taliban were going to sit around past the deadline that Trump set? If the Taliban had told US intelligence that they had their offensive planned on such and such date, do you think they would have held tight because we asked nicely?

Trump drew troop levels down to skeleton levels and released 5,000 Taliban prisoners. He got rid of the private security contractors. Our allies had been pulling out based on Trump's timetable. We were heavily outnumbered.

Would you have preferred that Biden
a) stuck to Trump's original schedule, resulting in an even worse pullout?
b) announced an even longer delay, hoping the Taliban wouldn't attack our heavily outnumbered forces?
c) start building troop numbers back up to support an even longer delay, thereby pissing off the Taliban, pissing off our allies, and giving Fox the headlines they wanted about Biden extending the war?
d) do what he did, delay as long as he felt it was safe, and pull out?

Any US civiliians left over there after the pullout are entirely to blame for their predicament. They had plenty of warning.
The Afghani citizens who should have been evacuated earlier weren't because Trump Administration wasn't processing security checks to clear them to come to the US. They intentionally left those people in danger to score political points.

This is exactly what Bush did with Obama. It's sad how easily some people blame Democrats because the Republicans set people up to get killed in order to score political points.

It's borderline criminal that you were subjected to that. I'm sorry that you did and I hope that you are well.

I firmly believe that there should have been an intense international criminal investigation that took into account Saudi funding and the fact that 15 of the hijackers were Saudi Arabian. Not only Bin Laden, but his funders as well, should have been prosecuted in international court. Then, we should have invested in the development of alternatives to petroleum products at an unprecedented rate so that in the future we would not feel the need to turn a blind eye to criminal complicity because we buy oil from a given nation. Instead, it took years to execute Bin Laden and his funders seem to have gotten away scot-free.

I know this is touchy and all, but after hearing about how women are constantly judged for their looks and how common sexual assault is, and unwanted advances, and how men treat women - especially attractive women - differently...I do find it surprising that more women don't prefer to wear them.

I'm just moderately unattractive and I feel much more comfortable wearing a mask. I'm also a little fat now and greatly prefer wearing clothes that hide my figure.

I'm told women feel much much much more pressure to be physically perfect. So, yeah, if I were a chick, I'd love for these to be socially acceptable.
