The creator and exec producer said that a "year of change" was possible. However, he hoped that Che, who this season became the person with the second most appearances behind the Weekend Update desk, overtaking Seth Meyers, would be a part of that change.

JFC, don't they have any editors at Deadline?

The cast is just too big now, obviously. Lorne used to run the show with an iron fist. Now cast members sign in the week before the season premiere and show up whenever they feel like it. Some actors dream of being on SNL, and now it's Pete Davidson's part time job.

You either give leeway for people having other opportunities or you lose them altogether.
I have no problem with any of it.

'Haste makes waste,' especially working under a Deadline.

The others were good. Chevy is the classic. It's like comparing James Bond's to Connery. There are some good, even great ones, but Connery is always the standard from which we compare to.

That said, Che and [white guy married to woman none of us have a shot with] are by far the funniest anchors in the role since Chevy Chase. I'd even argue they're the best, period.

There's nothing funny on TV anymore because it allowed itself to be pulled to the Twitter outrage garbage juice cheap reality celebrity productions. Anyone on the screen who makes a genuinely unsettling joke will be consumed for the food inside and their hair and nails tossed out to warn other jokers.

Banking on one of the least talented cast members who can't play a character or do a single impression, and has all the charisma of an angry chunk of driftwood? Sounds like a typical Lorne move.

Dismukes obvi promoted to main cast. Chloe as well.

Punky will be gone. Sarah may surprise us. Atari (yes spelled wrong) seems like he's vanished. New Biden and trump I like.

Main cast...

I think Chloe and Heidi can be the new Cecily and Kate. I can see Alex or Mikey leaving as well.

They're all super talented. I'll miss the old, and will embrace the new.

2022-05-14 1:19:26 PM
Not trying to sound hip but I have not actually watched the show since probably the mid-1990's. Not because of declining quality though. I had a job that made staying up until midnight a bad idea. After a while sleep was the preferred option and I lost interest in watching the show.

Occasionally someone will show me a clip but as funny as it is the realization that I am seeing the best part of that episode makes any desire to resume watching low. We all outgrow things and the show ran its course for me a long time ago. The current cast is for a different audience who want to be entertained with jokes about the hypocrisy of politicians they don't like and sketches with recurring characters.

No doubt it is still entertaining to its core audience but after the original cast left the revolving door of new performers leaves only a few opportunities for an Eddie Murphy or Phil Hartman to stand out. Many will likely have a career for as long as they desire but the show has become just another place for people to do their bits in hopes of something greater down the line.

Maybe we will see another Tina Fey or Will Farrel come out this new group. At least they will have a chance.

2022-05-14 1:24:53 PM
I guess the debate will be between Chevy Chase and Michael Che for best weekend update anchor.   With a few people always jumping in with Norm who was always "this close" to nailing it.

I like Pete Davidson, I think he's funny, and he gets too much shiat.  But I think it's time for him to graduate, especially since he has so many other projects going on and spends his time in LA being Reggie Bush's sloppy fourteenths.

Same goes for Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong.  McKinnon may be able to do more movies, Strong may have a future on TV.  Bowen Yang plays the same character, and it's become annoying, Kyle Mooney is like a 40 year old less accomplished Pete who may spend the rest of his career in the writing room.

Some of the newer casts have some future.  Not a big fan of Aristotle Athari, but Sara Sherman cracks me up, especially when she's on Weekend Update doing the "This Just in..." segment while exposing how horrible a person Colin is.

I think what you're describing is why the show is perfect for YouTube. It's always been hit and miss, so why not wait until the next day and just watch the bits that the audience thought was funny?

I think because it was something new, it made it special.
But it has not aged well.
This has been one of the better seasons.

Kate
Cecily
Pete
Kyle

Mikey
Alex
Che/Jost

Nice try, but it isn't a good fit

Lauren
Aristotle
Melissa

Safe

Ego
Heidi
Bowen
Sarah
JAJ
Chris
Andrew
Chloe

Kenan

Even with all those cuts, that's still a cast of nine without bringing any new faces in.

Everyone has their own opinion of the show and I was 8 years old when it started in 1975. My favorite era of the show was the Phil Hartman and Jan Hooks years and they were my favorite 2 performers on the show.

I'm just amazed that Lorne Michaels is still there. He's 77. It's time to start finding a replacement. And, maybe that person should be younger than retirement age?

I wonder how much day to day control he still has

I mean, why not hold on until season 50 (they're finishing 47) at this point?

You're not wrong. I watched all of SNL through the early 90s recently and it's never really that funny (in fact it's downright bad most of the time) until the Carvey/Hartman/Hooks seasons. Frankly it's probably as close to as good as its ever been now, though part of that is just how many people work on it now compared to previous seasons.

Oh I think he'll die still doing the job. Just one of those types of people it appears.

As has been mentioned before the cast needs to be cut in half.  The opening credits already run longer than most sketches.

Davidson has more than one foot out the door, he hasn't appeared in a live sketch for more than two months at this point.

Dennis Miller was the best Weekend Update Anchor until he sold out to the Fox News crowd bigger than Ephialtes of Trachis sold out to the Persians at the battle of Thermopylae cha cha.

And with his sitcom just cancelled Kenan will be on SNL, his mummified body hosting game shows long after the collapse off civilization.

2022-05-14 2:05:23 PM

The cast is enormous. I just found out yesterday that I've been on the cast roster since 2019, but they never called me in for rehearsals because there wasn't room to fit me into a sketch after they'd squeezed everybody else in.

Turns out three of my neighbors were also on the list and they didn't know either. Apparently we all entered a "Be On SNL!" contest by liking the wrong Instagram post or something and no one ever got back to us. They were all too busy taking turns dating Pete Davidson.

2022-05-14 2:12:12 PM
I think quite a few of them were going to leave in May of 2020 but when the pandemic ramped up, it changed everything.

Kubo: sno man: I'm on team Norm here too.

Always Team Norm.

[Youtube-video https://www.youtube.com/embed/thHWvoYfNyo]

Norm was hilarious, but Update is ultimately a team effort, and Che and Jost have made a phenomenal pairing over the years.  The fact that they're comfortable enough with one another to do their annual "write each other's material and make each other say the most horrifying shiat" routine really says a lot about the strength of their dynamic.

2022-05-14 2:18:34 PM
It's time for Kate to go. I love her, but she's gotten to the point where she sucks all the air out of every sketch she's in. She's too well known and too well worn at this point. Give the new kids a chance.

I don't know why Melissa Villasenor never hit, but I got a bad feeling about her chances of staying around. She's never on enough. I don't really care about the rest of the cast but Heidi Gardner is beautiful and if they fire her I'll stop watching.

2022-05-14 2:22:41 PM
I really enjoy PVRing SNL and watching it Sunday morning with bacon and eggs and Irished Up coffee.  It's usually really funny.  It'll suck the most if Che and Jost leave, but they'll find replacements.

If a bunch of the cast do leave, they need to really feature the Please Don't Destroy trio.  Laugh out loud funny in every single appearance I've seen them in.
