Then they all go open a new Waitrose.

Citrus puds for the win! Though the recipe states it takes over two hours to prep and 35 minutes to bake. Oh well, I guess it's not everyday that a 96 year old monarch hits a reign of 70 years.

When you know what you're doing, a lot of good cooking is just throwing shiat in a bowl. It's getting good at knowing how to throw the shiat in a bowl to achieve the desired result, that's where the skill and practice is required.

Trifle is a bit of an extreme case of just throwing shiat in a bowl, sure, but most of us have had terrible trifle (at least that's true for Australians, most of us have aunties who are always trying a new trifle recipe, don't know how common it is in the US) and can grasp that it still takes knowledge to get it right.

Also, some of the runners-up look really good. I think I'm gonna make the passionfruit and thyme tart.  The winner was way too fussy for anyone who doesn't have a staff of dessert chefs hanging around.

Custard made with cornflour (corn starch in the US).
Not a trace of booze; not even sherry.

No thanks

Trifle is not very common in the USA.  At least I've never seen it being served.  However, ISTR a story about someone from India who made trifle.  "Lady fingers" is an idiom for okra in Hindi.  So... yech.  I think beef with sauteed peas would be better than okra in a dessert.

I had an Aunt that made a trifle each year for Christmas. Hers was layers of butter-vanilla cake, vanilla custard, whipped cream and, if I recall correctly, cherries from canned cherry pie filling.
