I don't walk on anything like that. Septic tanks, manholes, grates, sewers or any other covered holes in the ground. I also try never to touch metal lampposts. I have seen enough on the news over the years to know there have been a lot of deaths from those things, of people and animals. I don't think of it as an irrational fear, as much as common sense. If you don't fall in, you could still break an ankle. Rather be alive and safe then sorry and dead.

"Authorities are still investigating what caused the woman's death, but they said there does not appear to be foul play."

Are they sure about that? Dying after falling into a septic tank seems like a pretty foul way to go.

"It appears where she either a fell into a hole that was created from her septic tank caving in or her weight itself it caved in right as she was standing on it," Taylor said.

However, it did not appear the woman drowned, according to Taylor.

Then how did she die? From the fall? I'm really confused, here.

Yeah, I nearly died by septic tank once.

I have a two-stage tank, and the flow between the two clogged, so I had to dig down 4' to uncover the first stage tank.

Doot doot doo.... Ok, there's the concrete hatch, I'll stand on that while I clear a little more dirt... Doot doot doo...

Nevermind the fact that there was 6' of poop water in the vent stack, and the only thing holding the hatch down against the water pressure was my weight. And then I stepped off of the hatch.

Thankfully I managed to hook a line to the hatch and get out of the hole before getting poo-inundated. It was a near miss at a Fark headline.

Suffocation most likely.
Methane, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and ammonia are common concentrated gases contained in septic tanks.
Same reason why multiple people die trying to save their friends or family members who fall into open cess-pits or silage silos. The gases are heavier than air, and they displace the oxygen.

Carbon dioxide asphyxiation, probably.

You've never taken a walk in NYC. By some miracle, New Yorkers do manage to (mostly) survive the hollow sidewalks and sidewalk cellar doors.

That tank had to be pretty ancient.  Concrete tanks don't just collapse, unless you had a fly by night operation put it in originally.  Steel tanks, on the other hand, yikes, have heard lots of horror stories about those failing.  Either way, you have to maintain 'em.  I had mine replaced a few years ago, was a fun process to watch.  Get it pumped yearly as I have six adults in this house o' mine.

As for not walking over them--hahahaha.  Will be mowing over it in a few hours.  Been nice knowing y'all.

Guy that emptied the tank, "you need to replace this". She ignores it. Appraiser, "there's a crack, you need to replace this." She doesn't believe him. Woman dies - family, "why didn't someone do something?"

I used to live in New York City, well Queens. The city was my playground when I was a teenager. I still remember when Central Park had those horrible cages in the zoo. It used to break my heart to see those poor animals in them, trying to move around. Of course back then I didn't think about those things. I moved up to Orange County a few years ago. The food wasn't quite as good, the pizza, Chinese, and bagels to name a few things. Now I am in Orange County, but in Florida. You can bet I miss the food now. The dirty water dogs, the pretzels and the hot nuts in the winter. We did get a White Castle a few months ago. I have never seen such lines to get in. They were waiting 2 or 3 hours to get in. That is longer then we waited to get on Rise Of The Resistance. We waited (Of course we were dying) and after about two weeks the lines got smaller. (The other thing was not going at meal time. This didn't bother us as we usually eat early.) It was worth the wait. (Needless to say, we ate too many and al got sick.) (That's why they call them Belly Bombers.) Now you know my life story, Sorry. I think I forgot what the topic was. I miss it all and I hope to go back. I will hit a pizza parlor. (Before seeing our relatives, of course.)

At her age she could have totally cracked her head really hard on the edge of wherever she fell through and that killed her. Brain bleed, or maybe wrenched her neck and that killed her. Maybe wrenched her neck and tore an artery, as I've seen once.
