When my mom told me to pox the monkeys every day, I knew it would lead to something sinister...and here we are.

In this case 'mild' is by comparison to smallpox. That's quite far from the conventional definition of mild.

Mild means "not severe enough to warrant hospital treatment."

Chicken pox can look a lot worse than that and still be easy to bounce back from.

And compared to Smallpox, monkey pox is a head cold.

There was a time when Covid's spread was so cryptic, they thought it was being caused by e-cigarettes.  Downplaying it led to a 10-sigma increase in American all-cause mortality.  If you haven't learned the lesson yet, you probably never will.

It's was directly from the article quoting the NHS.

Monkeypox is a rare viral infection which is usually mild and from which most people recover in a few weeks, according to the NHS. The virus does not spread easily between people and the risk to the wider public is said to be very low.

If you're such an expert in African diseases maybe you can try picking up a phone and offering your help to the  NHS? Clearly you know something they don't and your medical expertise could be so much more use to them than squandered here on Fark where nobody wants it.

If covid had been a pox it would have been taken more seriously. It's easy to ignore a cough but pock marks on your face would definitely keep a lot more people in and away from each other.

Monkeypox has a CFR of between 3 and 10 percent.  It leaves lifelong scars on healthy individuals.  If it's anything like smallpox and chicken pox, even paucisymptomatic sufferers will be rendered sterile.  No clue as to what R0 is in an urban environment, but it's clearly greater than 1.
