You probably shouldn't eat fish out of a lake. What they're on could conflict with what you're on.

However, his research has found "significant amounts of drugs," Sims said, including THC, cocaine and methamphetamine. From antibiotics to beta-blockers, caffeine to codeine, the pharmaceuticals our bodies are processing, and emitting are ending up back in our water source.

Damn, one can't even chew on Xanax bars anymore without destroying the environment.

The same coca leaves that are used to make marching powder are also used to create legit anesthetics. Every time someone says they found cocaine traces in the sewers I have to ask if they would prefer surgeons limited the anesthetics they use to chloroform and whiskey, just like back in great-great-grandads day.

Now you've piqued my curiosity. I'm aware of opiates, but what non-recreational drugs show up as cocaine on a test?

"Why go out and test our treated sewage?" the 8 News Now I-Team's David Charns asked researcher Dr. Douglas Sims.

"I think it is important, because everything we do as a person, or a human actually affects everything around us. We are all interconnected," Sims, who is also the school's dean, said.

"Because we're assholes."

Cocaine in it's pure form used to be in all sorts of medications before it was outlawed.  Whatever you had, headache, upset stomach, aches and pains, you would take some cocaine infused "medicine" and you'd feel great.  Doctors and pharmacists loved it because people kept coming back for more.

Yeah that's what Coca Cola used to be.  It was originally marketed as a medicine and had cocaine in it, but when that was outlawed they switched to caffeine and pivoted to a beverage.

This is pretty surprising, but I'm having a really hard time finding info on how other "caines" - i.e. lidocaine, procaine, benzocaine are produced.  You'd think that would google up pretty easily.

It seems like the common ones (lidocaine and procaine, which is novacaine, and benzocaine) are all tank car syntheses and have nothing to do with coca plant.  The wiki entry for coca plant doesn't mention any other drugs besides cocaine.

One of the lidocaine articles does mention how it is very different from cocaine, from the perspective of synthesis.  I would think that if an agency says it's testing water for cocaine, then we don't really have a basis for assuming they are mistakenly seeing other compounds just because they have similar names, because apparently they don't have similar origins.

How was cocaine invented anyway?  I know people have been smoking weed as long as there have been modern humans, but when did somebody say; "hey, why don't we refine these coca leaves with some other stuff into a powder and snort it"?

I believe in the areas where it grew naturally people would often chew or suck on the coca leaves.  In it's raw form it apparently provides a mild and pleasant buzz.  Human nature being what it is of course somewhere along the way someone thought "hey, what if I chewed on a whole bunch of leaves at once?" and it evolved from there into grinding it up and concentrating it down into cocaine.  Humans are very crafty when it comes to finding new ways to get farked up.

But you have to get stuff out of the leaves and make it into the stuff to crush and insufflate. That seems like a couple odd steps to take/invent/discover.
