By itself, no, but it is yet another instance where we see that there is no functional opposition to fascism and the death of the country. Our leaders are either pure evil (Republicans) or inept and refusing to fight against evil (Democrats). In this scenario there is no good outcome and the country will die.

Unpunished attempted coup should have told you. Losing the right to vote and free and fair elections should have told you. This should tell you. And yet Biden and Democratic leadership are demanding we pretend everything is going just fine so that they don't have to do anything.

I'd love to see the red states go but they'd try to invade as soon as they left. We have much better control over what they do as long as we're here to moderate their worst impulses. If they had their own country they'd nuke the world, or at least everyone who is not their specific brand of christian.

/You know, 'cause Jesus would want it that way.

2022-05-06 7:37:51 AM
That the red states now are pretty much openly supportive of a brand of theocratic fascism and anti science dogmatism means the only way out is long term de-radicalising or civil war.

I want to believe it's the loud vocal minority, but I don't think so anymore. I think it's brainwashing and cult like love of the GOP and hatred of Dems with no logical understanding of why.

How do you reach these people who believe that if you tell them anything contrary to the lies they've been told that you are the liar?

2022-05-06 7:50:46 AM
So, the Supreme Court now allows unlimited money in election campaigns, killed voting rights, bans abortion, and next they'll be coming after the gays...

Let Freedom Ring.

We're so f*cked.

2022-05-06 7:52:51 AM
America (post-colonialism) has always been for/by rich white men but it started to look a little different for the last 60 years or so - at least on parts of the surface.

This isn't the end, the surface is just getting stripped away by rich white men.

And we're so arrogant and f*cking stupid that we can't even admit when our "foes" are getting the best of us despite it being glaringly obvious. Bin Laden "hated our freedoms". Ope! Away they go. Russia hated our economy and our power in the world. Ope! There it goes. China hated our dominance as a technology and manufacturing giant. Ope! There it goes! All while we spend $5 dollars a day on desert for breakfast, whittle away the average national intelligence, and placate our increasing neurosis about the whole situation with ever-cheaper stuff, moar stuff, like good, "free" consumers.

This is a super-simplistic rendering of a more complex and nuanced national evolution, but it's morning and I have cat sh*t to scoop.

That whole speech...do work to improve their lives instead of trying to get them to agree that you want to improve their lives. Fix things as they wail and gnash their teeth and object instead of trying to soothe their fears. Build a fantastic, free education system. Give everyone free access to the "best health care system in the worldTM" and make it so that they never have to worry about hospital bills again. Improve their take-home pay by raising the minimum wage to a living wage. Fix the broken "justice" system.

As always, when you do good things the whiners end up shutting up. Continue to mire us in mediocrity just so a vast minority of morons stop saying mean things about you and the morons will end up winning, as we see today.

I think it was a combination of things... we went through the Great Depression and WWII together. So, we had a kind of collective WE'RE ALL AMERICANS thing going on. Then we had Vietnam, Watergate, Iran Hostages, Iran/Contra and then Wall Street really started to take over with total greed and corruption and buying every politician they could.

Then the GOP really kicked the Southern Strategy into high gear and totally divided America on the back of the collapse of American manufacturing. They shipped jobs overseas, destroyed unions, and eliminated pensions.

For the past 40 years they have taken, taken, taken from people. This has created the totally divided country we have today and the GOP knows exactly how to manipulate it because they are the ones that created it.

Not sure how we recover from all of that.

There's some of that nuance I knew others would add - appreciate it.

I don't know how we recover from that either. I don't know how we recover from any of this.
I don't know how much of it is worth recovering.

I don't know.

We just keep fighting... voting... hoping something breaks through. There's not much we as individuals can do.

What we need is a great leader to step forward and help guide us into the future. I look at all these "politicians" and I don't see one. If we don't get that... some new kind of Obama or something even better than that? Then we just continue our slide.

I picked the wrong time in my life to cut back on heavy drinking. :)

I do know I'm not going to live willingly around Fascists Nazis Republicans etc. I will not submit to that. If you're anywhere "left" then this should be axiomatic.

If that means an amicable (or otherwise) of the USA fine. Otherwise I'll take exile if you're all gonna end up going along with it in the name of unity.

Repubs also systemically destroyed unions and workers rights and Dems didn't do enough to counter, leading to lots of voters with shiat jobs and shiat pay that don't give a shiat anymore and want to watch everything burn. Hurting others is the point now.

The way things are going a blue state compact that provides mutual defense and aid with things like healthcare and disaster recovery is probably the way forward. The red states will become wastelands ruled by religious warlords so we'll have to build those walls.

Make no mistake, if/when this comes to pass, the already Red vs. Blue states will become even more polarized than they already are. A *massive* brain drain will occur on Red states as anyone with any sense that doesn't want to live in the Republic of Gileed will be fleeing over the coming years. They will take any excuse to get out. If you are gay, trans, or a woman who isn't in the tank for Jesus, you will be reaching for the escape hatch if it presents itself.

Several abortion refugees will start to exist and lots of uterus having persons who need abortions will either flee if they can or simply die. Stories will mount of deaths from sepsis and lack of medical care, birth rates will shoot up and a new wave of crime will take those states in about 15 years time. The combined efforts of stagnant minimum wages, no medical care, no material care, poor education, and no new jobs entering the area, because no corporation looking to hire intelligent people will base their operations there, will mean the Red states are going to very, VERY rapidly, become fiefdoms with serfs and corporate/Senator overlords.

shiat will get tribal real quick.

Honestly, the Blue states breaking off would be the most sane thing they could do, if The South wants to turn in to Iraq or Iran, there's little that can be done to stop it. If someone is determined, hellbent on shooting themselves in the head, they will find a way eventually.

The question then becomes, how does this break between Red and Blue states go. Because I don't see us voting to part ways comfortably, and the Reich Wing is very much out for blood and power and have passed caring how they acquire it.

Our current systems of laws have proven ineffective, and our police are mostly White Supremacist organizations. We're gearing up for a recipe where the army will have to fight the police. Ok, that one is probably out there in "We're being controlled by lizard people" but given the past few years, I'd say nothing is off the table.

I look forward to a split. It's not even remotely worth trying to fix. Everything I do now is geared toward that end. IT matters not one bit to me that this is what the russians wanted. I'm more than happy to go down that road if the people around me are stupid enough to become this dangerously brainwashed.

2022-05-06 9:25:29 AM
I know everyone thinks I'm crazy for continuing to say it, but I'm gonna say it again:

Dissolve the United States.

Let the CSA (or People's Republic of America, or whatever they want to call themselves) form from the 25 red states who want to go out on their own.

Reboot the United States of America with 25 states and a few territories-turned-states, and a brand spanking new Constitution and Bill of Rights that is updated (like the founders INTENDED) to reflect modern ideals.

Allow immigration into the USA from the CSA for anyone who feels oppressed by the CSA's no-doubt theocratic, right-wing rulership. Allow people in the USA to freely leave to go to the conservative nation if they so choose.

If the CSA tries to start a war, they'll be ill-equipped to handle it because they'll be broke (seriously, look at the economics of any red state) and they'll have few allies in the world theater since they'll obviously become an isolationist nation. Maybe they'll have Russia on their side, but we've seen what an inept military the Russians have under Putin's leadership. I think the entire rest of NATO would be fine opposing anything they could throw at us, and they don't dare nuke us because we're too damned close, geographically.

When the CSA eventually collapses from mismanagement, we can sweep in and take back the land from them and spread democracy across the continent again, if we so choose.

We'll be far stronger without them than we ever were with them. You know this. We all know this. Conservatives are the cyst on America's neck. Time to have it removed.

You're presuming that a new nation would be set up in the same way that would give an outsized political power to those minorities.

Which, I dunno. Maybe not the way things would happen.

Nope. Collins already said she's a no. There are no good Republicans, and unfortunately an extremely limited number of good Democrats.
