They were stupid.

But paired with the right shirt and suit...

Also, ties defy physics. Expensive ones attract beer towards them for a reason that still baffles scientists

I seem to remember something about the fake buttons on sleeves are there to prevent the whipping of faces on said sleeves. Nothing about the whole tie thing tho.

That was actually one of the minor plot issues in this book:

They deserve the same function day to day as a wristwatch, combing your hair, or one of those multitools.  It's decoration.

How often do you need to know the exact time?  Just shave your head and save money on shampoo.  And for the love of all that is good and holy, don't pretend that your office job requires a pocket knife with a Napoleon complex.

I like wearing ties. They're another fun thing to accessorize my outfits with.

What's the point of wearing clothes anyway? We should all wear one-piece dull gray non-gendered ankle-length smocks. Farking farks sake, submitter.

Also I look farking good in a shirt and tie.

No, I'm not going to shave my head.  I like my hair.  I own a rather nice watch I only wear when getting dressed up.  A multitool is useless until you need one, then it's indispensable. It's not intended as a weapon.

So now you know why some people wear a tie.

I don't mind wearing one.  Got a bunch of 'em.  Also a box full of clip-on bowties, the skinny 1950s ones.  Just because people really hate those.

The onion on the belt was hard to see so we moved on to the tie where everyone could see you must be important.

I spent years being required to wear a necktie, but I was fortunate to have a ton of leeway on what I could wear. So I amassed a big collection of ties. Some of my favorites were some Animaniacs ties, a tie with all the martians from A Toy Story, one with a palm tree on a beach, some vintage ties from the 40s, a bunch of Dr. Seuss ties, etc.. And then I switched jobs and ties were actually discouraged. I miss having chances to wear my ties, but at the same time I am glad they are not required.

I might also add that, while they are most decidedly decorative, they may also occasionally have other uses, if one might be in the company of someone of a decidedly playfully frisky demeanor.

A tie as an obligation is a leash.

It probably came from Elizabethan times and it probably served to disguise the symptoms of some wasting disease like half the other wardrobe items we get from back then.

I can't remember the last time I wore a tie. When I first got hired in my current job I had to wear one, but they changed the dress code to button down shirts and dress pants. When we went back to the office last August  we were told jeans and polo shirts is acceptable dress.

/The new hires have no idea the hell us old timers had to go through.
//have about 40 ties in the closet that are collecting dust

I look good in a tie and matching pocket square on special occasions, though I normally wear a button cover and shirt studs with a tux.

Many doctors and nurses I know work at hospitals that have banned employees from wearing ties in hospitals in the past couple of years because they're disease vectors.

I was in the same situation about 20 years back.  I have a lot of Looney Tunes ties, especially Taz.  Then I started at NASA and on my 5th day out office admin said if I wore a tie in again, she'd string me up by it.

Jerry Garcia's estate has been making ties based on his work that are bright and obnoxious, and I've gotten a few in more recent years for when I need to wear a tie.

Possibly the funniest trick feom back in the day of tie wearing was confusing people by wearing a tie with the same image on a t-shirt underneath, so when you take the tie off after a meeting and unbutton the dress shirt, people know that's what you were wearing in the meeting, but can't figure out how you weren't dressed up for the meeting.

/wishes I had asked about my mom's cousin's tie collection when he passed
//has two ties from him, thin white silk and a real bow tie

I've worked in a Japanese office that dropped its necktie requirement. I DNRTFA but unless they have been explicitly forbidden I bet a stack of yen everybody there is still wearing one.
