And Ill Communication is 28 years old.

They have one of the most amazing career arcs of any band, ever.  And there was still so much more to come;  Losing that dude was a huge loss to music.

I wasn't really a fan of them from the start, but I remember my brother getting 'License to Ill' on cassette when he was about 6 years old.  He's 43 now.

My two younger brothers and I had Paul Revere memorized when we were kids.  MCA was my favorite, he had the best flow of the trio.

He did listen to his doctors. He tried everything. At the time he died, he'd undergone genetic treatments hoping that would target the exact type of cancer more specifically. By the time the tumor was initially found, it had already spread to his lymphatic system, which means you're already behind the eight-ball.

yeah it really bummed me out too.  I had tried a couple times to see them in concert but some real life BS always got in the way.  I had tickets in hand for the Rhyme and Reason tour but the day I got them was the day Mike D busted up his shoulder before the tour started.  the dates got pushed back and in the interim Rage Against the Machine (co-headlining act on the tour) broke up and the whole thing fell apart.

he did, eventually, but not at the start.  when it became obvious that doing nothing medically wasn't working then he switched but by then it had spread.

The Beastie Boys book as read by Ad Rock and Mike D had some amazing stories about all of them and what happened. Their love for MCA is apparent and who he was to that group and their direction and drive was a great thing to read/hear.

I still argue, sometimes devil's advocate and sometimes very seriously, that Paul's Boutique was the best album of the 80s.

Saw them live once and it was a great show. Was going to see them at Lollapalooza and they didn't perform due to Yauch's illness. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs filled in and they were a great show but I did lament not seeing them again.

I would recommend the recent book that came out and on audiobook. Hearing Diamond and Horovitz tell the tales is epic.

RIP Yauch...you are legend!

The man spit rhymes so ill that they gave him salivary gland cancer!

Huge loss.

I saw them twice - once was them on 3 mics with MMM on turntables at the Tibetan Freedom Show in SF, and another time with the full punk/hiphop set on a rotating stage at Oakland Arena with Invisibl Skratch Piklz (MMM opened their set with Tom Sawyer.  Yes, the Rush song).  Awesome shows!

I learned about it on here. It's become one of my favorite shows ever. There's something about it that just hits with me.

There's a "Vantasner Danger Meridian" shirt on Etsy and a fake copy of the Structural Dynamics of Flow I've almost bought more than once.

I bought License To Ill on cassette when I was 19 and played it constantly in my car.  Saw them in concert with Run-DMC and had so much fun.  They grew and evolved, like all great groups do.  I cried when I heard MCA had died.  Can't believe it's been 10 years.

Very casual fan.  their last few albums just didn't do it for me.  Check Your Head, absolute farking masterpiece.

that was a very sad day - i was at work and probably saw it on Fark.  I went out to tell some coworkers and they were like, "you're kidding ,right?"  so sad.

regret not seeing them.  they came thru phoenix twice, and I rememebr thinking, "that'd be cool but........ennnnhhhhh."  one time i was living in Flagstaff, which is a good 2.5 - 3 hour drive, so that was my excuse to not go.  so wish I'd seen them.

His was the first musician death to really hit me hard. Such a massive bummer, and still is.

I loved the Beasties ever since I was a little kid and my sister got License to Ill on vinyl. Then they became THE farking act of my teens and twenties. Hello Nasty was basically the soundtrack of my entire time in college, and is still my favorite. I would get into good natured arguments with friends about it, who mostly considered Ill Communication and Check Your Head to be the apex. But then I read once that the Boys themselves own favorite album of theirs was Hello Nasty, and I was like farkin rad, I knew that album was special.
