...but they are perfect for sipping on a back porch and a proper sit down with a friend or three. It is a civilized beverage from a more civilized age*.

*OK, not really, but there is very little about sitting down with a Mint Julep that feels rushed or hurried, and it is beverage that encourages you to slow your ass down and take a minute or two, with a few people whose company you enjoy. You make simple syrup by the necessary batch size, you got some time on your hands anyway.

When there is fresh mint in the garden and I want to cool off in shade a mint julep can be quite pleasant. I really should up my mojito game.

The mint julep is just one of a large class of similar drinks, most of which are no longer in fashion. It isn't necessarily the best of its kind, but it's the only one you'll find unless you're a food history nerd.

When Hunter's in the bar terrifying the old guy, you can replace a few words and make the old guy a Trumper (he would be, we know that) and the Black Panthers can be replaced with Antifa. It's as clever now as then.

You say "decadent and depraved" like it is a bad thing.

/Yes, I enjoy mint julep.  Great summer drink, sort of a white people mojito.

You know how you can tell a Southerner didn't write that piece?

Because in major Southern hotels and restaurants, mint juleps have always been popular enough that you keep a prepared mix at your bartending station. Indeed -- especially in the spring and summer -- any bartender at a high-end Southern establishment will find him- or herself making twice as many juleps as sours or collinses.

I tried a mint julep when I was on a plantation tour in Louisiana.   It wasn't that terrible but I won't be ordering one again.

mint is just beginning to sprout anew here , most of it goes for some great iced tea but there's plenty for mojitos and juleps and other mischief too...
